Description

The team-spirit sign by the side of the highway seems a good omen to loner Morgan Walsh, as he drives to what could be the most important visit of his life-a chance to join the North American Pack. Then he wakes naked in the woods, surrounded by wolf tracks and a ring of suspicious cops. The situation only gets worse when he's bailed out by Alpha-elect Elena Michaels and Clayton Danvers, her terrifying enforcer and mate. Disappointed that such a promising young werewolf risked exposing them, Elena isn't expecting anything from the pesky retrieval job except some much-needed alone time with Clay. Instead, she finds a different kind of evil stalking the streets and forests of Westwood, New York. Trapped in town by a snowstorm and sabotage, Elena, Clay and Morgan must find the mysterious threat before it sets its sights on them.… (more)

When Morgan (see Frostbitten) decided to visit Elena Michaels, the alpha elect of the North American Werewolf pack the last thing he wanted was trouble. When he stops in a small town to eat and then wakes up nude in the snow with paw prints all around him, he is afraid he is in trouble. When Elena

shows up with the terrifying Clayton Danvers, her mate and the pack enforcer, he is sure of it. While Elena and Clay just want to get Morgan out of jail and out of town, they are drawn into a mystery the town seems to want to keep hidden when they find the tires on their and Morgans cars slashed.

This is a good novella of her Otherworlds series and keeps the reader entertained, the way the story ended was disappointing. It could have been done better by just being a few pages longer and answering what happens with Morgan.

Even after her Women of the Otherwold series has officially come to an end with 13, Kelley Armstrong does not seem to have given up on the series.

Forbidden is sold as a novella, but it is long enough that it could have passed as a short novel back when that did not mean 300+ pages minimum – one

could even imagine it (with the addition of some sub-plot and maybe a sex scene or two thrown in) as a full-length addition to the series. Like her previous novella, Hidden, it is about and mostly told from the point of view of Elena, female werewolf and alpha-elect of the North American pack; the illustrations are done by a different artist though, and I have to say that while I’m still not all that keen on them, I like them somewhat better this time, because they at least do not look like wannabe comic panels. And like always with Kelley Armstrong, we get a highly entertaining adventure with excellent characterisation – here, most notably Morgan who we first encountered in Frostbitten and who has decided to leave his isolation and give joining a try. His uncertainty about where exactly his place is and his being torn between his previous life as a loner and his desire to belong somewhere is very well described, and as usual Armstrong manages to convincingly pull off her unique mixture of wolf and human psychology.

All in all, Forbidden might not be the most exciting entry in the series, but it is nice to see Armstrong still returning to the characters and it is overall a solid and very enjoyable read for readers of the Women of the Otherwold series. It is maybe a bit more fanservice-ish than even the earlier novellas (I admit I already have to struggle a bit to remember what the main plot was about), but being a fan myself I don’t really have any issues with that.

Great story with Clay and Elena (though pretty much any story with Clay and Elena is a win in my book). Even if you haven't read the Women of the Otherworld series (you really should start), you will totally get this story. It is fine as a standalone.

The story can be read as a stand alone or read after the events in Frostbitten. If you haven't read Frostbitten then the main plot is told to you in a sentence but I don't think it ruins the entire book. Elena and Clay go to help Morgan who is in jail after being found in the woods naked and

surrounded by paw prints. Turns out there have been some murders in the town and it looks like it might be a werewolf mutt or it could be a human killer. This is a quick mystery and shows Elena coming to grips with the idea of becoming the Alpha of the pack. The only real complaint I had to the book was the placement of the color plates in the story gave away the suspense of if Elena and Clay would rescue Morgan in time.

I started reading the "werewolf" books several years ago. The characters have matured but remained the same in personality. The more recent books seem to be much shorter than the earlier ones but it doesn't in any way distract from the quality of the story. A very enjoyable read.
