Description

Ever since Reyes Farrow escaped from a hell dimension in which Charley Davidson accidentally trapped him, the son of Satan has been brimstone-bent on destroying the world his heavenly Brother created. His volatile tendencies have put Charley in a bit of a pickle. But that's not the only briny vegetable on her plate. While trying to domesticate the feral being that used to be her husband, she also has to deal with her everyday life of annoying all manner of beings--some corporeal, some not so much--as she struggles to right the wrongs of society. Only this time she's not uncovering a murder. This time she's covering one up. Add to that her new occupation of keeping a startup PI venture--the indomitable mystery-solving team of Amber Kowalski and Quentin Rutherford--out of trouble and dealing with the Vatican's inquiries into her beloved daughter, and Charley is on the brink of throwing in the towel and becoming a professional shopper. Or possibly a live mannequin. But when someone starts attacking humans who are sensitive to the supernatural world, Charley knows it's time to let loose her razor sharp claws. Then again, her number one suspect is the dark entity she's loved for centuries. So the question becomes: Can she tame the unruly beast before it destroys everything she's worked so hard to protect?… (more)

The Trouble With the Twelfth Grave by Darynda Jones

12th Book in the paranormal / urban fantasy series. Must read the prior books before this one.
Charlie sees dead people. She is the Grim Reaper after all.
This book has ghosts, demons, gods and so much more.
Lots of dark sarcastic humor including
Show More
chapter titles.

I donā€™t want to include spoilers, so if youā€™ve read this series, know that you are going to read this in one sitting and immediately go to order the next.
If you havenā€™t read this series yet, there will be 13 in total. Itā€™s a bit irreverent, quite a bit of mystery solving, otherworldly and so much fun. Dark too.

My favourite Grim Reaper is finally back. On the surface, Charley Davidson may look like your average boot-wearing, taco-scarfing, coffee-swilling PI. But thatā€™s her day job. To souls of the dead, sheā€™s a bright light who provides safe passage to the other side. Oh, and turns out sheā€™s a God.

You know, like one of those really ancient, powerful beings but with better hair.

Thereā€™s never any shortage of weird & wacky cases for her & partner Cookie to solve. But right now Charlie has a more pressing problem. At the end of the last book, she sort of sent her husband to Hell. Literally. Reyes is also a God & it was supposed to be a quick business trip. Just pop down there, clear up a few things & get home in time for dinner. The good news is heā€™s back. The bad news? While the entity that returned may look like Reyes, lets just say heā€™s in a really bad mood & Charleyā€™s pretty sure itā€™s not down to jet lag.

Meanwhile her Uncle Bob has a few weird cases of his own. Heā€™s a detective with the Albuquerque P.D. & the discovery of some oddly burned bodies has him scratching his head. No human could be responsible for the injuries & itā€™s not long before all eyes turn to Reyes 2.0.

Charley is heartbroken but to tell the truth, she barely recognizes the man sheā€™s loved for eons. Heā€™s always been the dark side to her light but now she has to wonder if thereā€™s anything left of the old Reyes. If not, heā€™ll have to be taken out & the only one powerful enough to do it is Charley.

Thatā€™s the story line in a tiny nutshell. As with the other books, there are multiple subplots & part of the fun is trying to figure out which are related. The regular gang is back & resigned to the fact that sooner or later Charley will drag them into battle against some scary critter intent on wreaking havoc. Dialogue is sharp & frequently hilarious to distract you from the possibility we humans are about to become snack food. Each chapter opens with a ā€œCharleyismā€, random snippets of words to live by that always make me smile (I want a throw pillow stitched with: ā€œI never said Iā€™d die without coffee. I said others would.ā€)

I donā€™t read a lot of paranormal/urban fantasy but this is one of 3 series that are exceptions to the rule. First, because Iā€™m a fan of writing that is smart. Second, because this author has created an incredible world. The back stories of the characters & how it all works is so intricate & well thought out. Thatā€™s why I wouldnā€™t recommend this as a stand alone.

Itā€™s a mad dash of a story full of colourful characters, action & reveals that further the overall arc of the series. But that endingā€¦..seriously?! Guarantees Iā€™ll be in line for #13.

I have said it before and I will say it again, the best part about these books are the snarky attitude that the characters give off as well as all of the Meme, Quotes, True Facts, etc. that the author incorporates into the books. I always spend time reading each and every one of these quotes that
Show More
are on the front of each chapter. There are so many favorites. I would want that job of just searching for all of these quotes for these books. Ok, onto the story.

Reyes is gone. Well gone for the moment. Charley is not going down without a fight to bring back her husband. He may be the must feared demon but he can set her soul on fire with just a look or touch. I love Reyes but this former self of him is "hot. Talk about the ultimate "bad boy". Yet in true Darynda Jones fashion, she keeps the wittiness, charm, and full personality of Reyes in tack.

On the other hand, it was nice to see Charley interacting more with all of her friends with Cookie and Garrett. The scene where Charley walks in on Garrett sleeping with a woman in his bed only to have a gun pointed at her head and Charley commenting "I brought you a cupcake" almost made me bust out laughing. This would not have been a bad thing if I was not at work. Finally, can I talk about the ending. Talk about cliffhanger. The Trouble with Twelfth Grave will have you bursting at the seams with laughter; as Charley and her friends, find themselves dealing with mayhem, murder, and tons of snarky comments. You won't want to put this book down.

Now you see him, now you don't. I love that things aren't always as bad as they seem to be at the end of the previous book, but man, waiting to find out is always a killer.

Charley continues to amaze me. I know that this is a story, but when I'm reading, it really does feel like real life and I
Show More
can't fathom how Charley continues to do all she does. Well maybe I do, a lot of coffee and humor might have something to do with it.

There was quite a bit of things in THE TROUBLE WITH TWELFTH GRAVE that surprised me. We get answers to things we didn't even know we didn't have the answers to. People we didn't expect to see show up in unexpected places. Characters we didn't think could get any more awesome, get even more awesome. You would think after 12 books that not much else could surprise meā€”good and badā€”, but Darynda Jones continues to pull out all the stops when it comes to her characters, their world and the storyline I can't seem to get enough of.

I have a lot of feelings about a lot of things in the twelfth installment of the Charley Davidson series, but I don't want to give anything away, it would totally kill your reading experience.

The end is upon us. How will things end for the Charley Davidson series? I am both excited and sad to find out.

The Charley Davidson series is one of my favorite series ever. Charley's snarky comebacks, as well as the one-liners that head every chapter, always have me in stitches. The heady mix of supernatural action, romance, and humor, all experienced with Charley by an immensely likable supporting cast of
Show More
characters, make this series a sure winner. After learning that author Darynda Jones is planning to end the series with #13 (how apropos), I approached this #12 with anticipation and dread. I don't want this series to ever end!

Having said all that, as much as I loved #12, there were a few things that prevented me from giving the book 5 stars. First, the pros, the biggest one being just two words: Garrett Swopes! For at least two books now, I've been begging for Garrett to have a bigger role. Yes! Finally! In #12, Garrett has a bigger role, and one of his duties finally satisfied my wish to have His Gorgeousness do something fun with Charley -- but still leaving Charley faithful to Reyes. Thank you, Darynda Jones! Another pro: the supernatural battle scenes are epic - love it - super dramatic, all fire and heat and smoke and darkness. I wouldn't have minded having a few more of those in the book. And another pro: the return appearance of Officer Taft. Although his role remained small in #12, it sure was nice to see him again.

Now the cons: Unfortunately, it appears that the drawback of giving Garrett a bigger role is giving Osh a smaller one, darn it. Osh is such a fun character - he just lights up the pages whenever he appears. More Osh, please! Another con: The earthly criminal case that Charley investigates just wasn't that interesting to me, although the resolution was great fun. Usually I'm just as fascinated and emotionally drawn by the earthly case as I am with her dealings with the supernatural world, but this time, every time the earthly case popped up, I just wanted to get past it and back to the where-is-Reyes-and-what-has-Rey'azikeen-done-with-him plot.

So #12 ends with a cliffhanger after a plot shocker. Of course I can't wait to read #13, but I'm curious as to how Jones will end the series. Do demons-who-try-to-do-good get a happily ever after? #12 was a solid 4 stars; I'm hoping Jones can end the series with a worthy 5-star novel. #13 has an expected publication date of October 30, 2018.

Darynda has done it again! Iā€™ve read all of the books in this series and this one, just as the others, is a hit; a definite MUST read. I canā€™t believe I have to wait a year for the next one.

Oh Charley, I have missed you so. This was the 12th book in the Charley Davidson series and was an incredibly entertaining read. Really there is only one Charley Davidson and she is always incredibly quirky and hilarious. I loved getting to visit this world again and love where the story is going.

I
Show More
listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was a delight to listen to. King does an excellent job narrating and makes these books even more fun.

Reyes was sent into the God Glass but returned as something different. Charley is trying to figure out how to get the old Reyes back. In the middle of all of this Charley gets called in to help with some strange murders; the victims all appear to be sensitive to the supernatural world.

I loved all the wonderful characters and the crazy, fast pace of this novel. I always wonder if there will be another series of books featuring Charleyā€™s daughter in them.

I was a bit frustrated with the ending; it seems to be almost the same as what happened at the end of book 11. Now I have to wait forever to see what happens in book 13...arg.

Overall this was an amazing read, this series has been so much fun. I would definitely recommend to those who enjoy light-hearted investigative urban fantasy.

Good but...

I really like this series but I think I liked this one the least. There was so much jumping around and this ending has a familiar ring to it with someone going missing at the end. Weā€™ve seen it before several times. I will continue reading this series but I wish for once they could all
Show More
remain on the same plane and solve a mystery together rather than having to fight their way back from some calamity each time.

I LOVE this series. The narrator of the audiobooks does a fantastic job with the characters voices and emotions. She has helped me fall in love with these characters, even though I would still fall in love with them reading a printed book. This time there are a few shocks that made me gasp out loud
Show More
while reading in a car with co-workers and they all had to know what happened. Reyes is not himself, or is he? We learn more about Charley being a God and what that means. Charley was snarky and funny as ever.

Again, I could not put this down and read it very fast. I know I will be purchasing the series in an audiobook and listen to it over and over. That is saying a lot as I really don't read a book a second time.

Thanks to Netgalley for an advanced copy.

Reyes is not in good place, and he's not as was. Let's just say that he might be making Daddy proud. Charlie has this whole new title resting on her scared shoulders. Someone or something is killing gifted people and Charlie needs to find answers while protecting her friends and dealing with this
Show More
not right Reyes. Life is messed up, but Charlie never stops looking for answers, and a distracting laugh. The ending, oh my, I cried. To do such a noble thing to be struck with such a cost, sorrow fell hard. My poor favorite characters, bruised but never beaten, I hope.

Ms. Jones, you are wickedly good at this. You took my heart through the shadows, through the rubble, into the struggle for good/evil, life/death, love/faith, and then threw me into a dark ravine with no bottom in sight. I loved it, couldn't get enough, and want more pain and laughs.
if you love snark, romance, action, love and coffee read this series.

Okay, I take it back. The worldbuilding got much better in this one! The method of delivery works much better--telling us a children's book instead of revealing it in dialogue. I was also impressed by the subtleties of Rey'azikeen's characterization. He really read like an amalgamation of his
Show More
various aspects. I even went back after finishing reading, and it all tracks wonderfully.

I definitely felt the wheels grinding to a stop on this next to the last book in the series. I know there is a purpose but I guess I'm not ready for it to happen or I can't see how it will happen. This one made me feel like I got behind a slow driver with no choice but to follow. BUT I still loved
Show More
it because the characters are like family at this point.

Way to set up the final book in the series. I love this author and this series.
LibraryThing member murderbydeath
I love this series - especially the later ones - and even though I enjoyed this one enough to read it in one sitting today, it was not one of her best. Mostly because the plot(s) were utterly transparent. There was never any doubt in my mind what Reyes was looking for, or what would happen when he
Show More
found it (although the third member of the showdown was a delightful surprise). There was never any doubt in my mind who was responsible for the killings either, although the 'other' murder plot, while not central to much of anything, was interesting and its resolution unexpected.

There are also a few story elements that keep getting repeated in the books - honestly, it's like hell has a revolving door - but Jones still manages to write a captivating, and hilarious, story that expands on biblical mythology while honouring its structure and its spirit. So in spite of not being everything it could be, it was exactly what I needed today.

I love this series so much, and the only thing that kept me from enjoying this book as much as I would have otherwise is that I know there is only one book left! Argh!! Well, at least I wasn't disappointed in the story, as it was just as fun as the others. With the series coming to an end, a lot of
Show More
questions are being answered, which is nice, but at the same time, a lot of new questions are arising, which is also nice. Weird how that works! Basically, we're seeing how everything is tying together, and how all of the previous books have led us to this point, but we're also kept guessing at how everything is going to end. Thank the gods all of our regular characters are still there with Charley, because I would feel totally let down if they weren't. The stakes are being raised, and everybody has a part to play. I'm on the edge of my seat to see how this all plays out!

5/5 stars.

The Trouble With Twelfth Grave
3 Stars

In the penultimate book of the series, Charley Davidson faces her most difficult challenge yet as her husband, Alexander Reyes Farrow, isn't quite himself when he returns from the Hell dimension. In fact, he has literally come back as someone else, namely
Show More
Reyā€™aziel, and boy is he p*ssed off at Charley.

Unfortunately, the series has not returned to its former glory. The conflict between Charley and Reyā€™aziel (Reyes) established at the end of the previous book does not live up to its potential mainly due to the fact that the twist is obvious from the start - no fan of the series (and only true fans are still reading) would believe that Reyes had become so evil as to kill innocent people let alone his own child...

Moreover, the story within a story that basically recaps every event and explanation provided thus far in the series is tiresome and tedious. It feels like Jones had a page count to fill and decided to repeat the entire plot to fulfill her contractual obligations.

Finally, Charley's flirtatious interactions with Garrett and Osh are over the top and not a little bit squicky, especially considering that Osh is Beep's future love interest. I so could have done without those images in my head.

Overall, I'm hanging in there until the end because there is only one book left. I'm not holding my breath for a masterpiece.
