Description
Ever since Reyes Farrow escaped from a hell dimension in which Charley Davidson accidentally trapped him, the son of Satan has been brimstone-bent on destroying the world his heavenly Brother created. His volatile tendencies have put Charley in a bit of a pickle. But that's not the only briny vegetable on her plate. While trying to domesticate the feral being that used to be her husband, she also has to deal with her everyday life of annoying all manner of beings--some corporeal, some not so much--as she struggles to right the wrongs of society. Only this time she's not uncovering a murder. This time she's covering one up. Add to that her new occupation of keeping a startup PI venture--the indomitable mystery-solving team of Amber Kowalski and Quentin Rutherford--out of trouble and dealing with the Vatican's inquiries into her beloved daughter, and Charley is on the brink of throwing in the towel and becoming a professional shopper. Or possibly a live mannequin. But when someone starts attacking humans who are sensitive to the supernatural world, Charley knows it's time to let loose her razor sharp claws. Then again, her number one suspect is the dark entity she's loved for centuries. So the question becomes: Can she tame the unruly beast before it destroys everything she's worked so hard to protect?… (more)

12th Book in the paranormal / urban fantasy series. Must read the prior books before this one.
Charlie sees dead people. She is the Grim Reaper after all.
This book has ghosts, demons, gods and so much more.
Lots of dark sarcastic humor including
I donāt want to include spoilers, so if youāve read this series, know that you are going to read this in one sitting and immediately go to order the next.
If you havenāt read this series yet, there will be 13 in total. Itās a bit irreverent, quite a bit of mystery solving, otherworldly and so much fun. Dark too.
Thereās never any shortage of weird & wacky cases for her & partner Cookie to solve. But right now Charlie has a more pressing problem. At the end of the last book, she sort of sent her husband to Hell. Literally. Reyes is also a God & it was supposed to be a quick business trip. Just pop down there, clear up a few things & get home in time for dinner. The good news is heās back. The bad news? While the entity that returned may look like Reyes, lets just say heās in a really bad mood & Charleyās pretty sure itās not down to jet lag.
Meanwhile her Uncle Bob has a few weird cases of his own. Heās a detective with the Albuquerque P.D. & the discovery of some oddly burned bodies has him scratching his head. No human could be responsible for the injuries & itās not long before all eyes turn to Reyes 2.0.
Charley is heartbroken but to tell the truth, she barely recognizes the man sheās loved for eons. Heās always been the dark side to her light but now she has to wonder if thereās anything left of the old Reyes. If not, heāll have to be taken out & the only one powerful enough to do it is Charley.
Thatās the story line in a tiny nutshell. As with the other books, there are multiple subplots & part of the fun is trying to figure out which are related. The regular gang is back & resigned to the fact that sooner or later Charley will drag them into battle against some scary critter intent on wreaking havoc. Dialogue is sharp & frequently hilarious to distract you from the possibility we humans are about to become snack food. Each chapter opens with a āCharleyismā, random snippets of words to live by that always make me smile (I want a throw pillow stitched with: āI never said Iād die without coffee. I said others would.ā)
I donāt read a lot of paranormal/urban fantasy but this is one of 3 series that are exceptions to the rule. First, because Iām a fan of writing that is smart. Second, because this author has created an incredible world. The back stories of the characters & how it all works is so intricate & well thought out. Thatās why I wouldnāt recommend this as a stand alone.
Itās a mad dash of a story full of colourful characters, action & reveals that further the overall arc of the series. But that endingā¦..seriously?! Guarantees Iāll be in line for #13.
Reyes is gone. Well gone for the moment. Charley is not going down without a fight to bring back her husband. He may be the must feared demon but he can set her soul on fire with just a look or touch. I love Reyes but this former self of him is "hot. Talk about the ultimate "bad boy". Yet in true Darynda Jones fashion, she keeps the wittiness, charm, and full personality of Reyes in tack.
On the other hand, it was nice to see Charley interacting more with all of her friends with Cookie and Garrett. The scene where Charley walks in on Garrett sleeping with a woman in his bed only to have a gun pointed at her head and Charley commenting "I brought you a cupcake" almost made me bust out laughing. This would not have been a bad thing if I was not at work. Finally, can I talk about the ending. Talk about cliffhanger. The Trouble with Twelfth Grave will have you bursting at the seams with laughter; as Charley and her friends, find themselves dealing with mayhem, murder, and tons of snarky comments. You won't want to put this book down.
Charley continues to amaze me. I know that this is a story, but when I'm reading, it really does feel like real life and I
There was quite a bit of things in THE TROUBLE WITH TWELFTH GRAVE that surprised me. We get answers to things we didn't even know we didn't have the answers to. People we didn't expect to see show up in unexpected places. Characters we didn't think could get any more awesome, get even more awesome. You would think after 12 books that not much else could surprise meāgood and badā, but Darynda Jones continues to pull out all the stops when it comes to her characters, their world and the storyline I can't seem to get enough of.
I have a lot of feelings about a lot of things in the twelfth installment of the Charley Davidson series, but I don't want to give anything away, it would totally kill your reading experience.
The end is upon us. How will things end for the Charley Davidson series? I am both excited and sad to find out.

Having said all that, as much as I loved #12, there were a few things that prevented me from giving the book 5 stars. First, the pros, the biggest one being just two words: Garrett Swopes! For at least two books now, I've been begging for Garrett to have a bigger role. Yes! Finally! In #12, Garrett has a bigger role, and one of his duties finally satisfied my wish to have His Gorgeousness do something fun with Charley -- but still leaving Charley faithful to Reyes. Thank you, Darynda Jones! Another pro: the supernatural battle scenes are epic - love it - super dramatic, all fire and heat and smoke and darkness. I wouldn't have minded having a few more of those in the book. And another pro: the return appearance of Officer Taft. Although his role remained small in #12, it sure was nice to see him again.
Now the cons: Unfortunately, it appears that the drawback of giving Garrett a bigger role is giving Osh a smaller one, darn it. Osh is such a fun character - he just lights up the pages whenever he appears. More Osh, please! Another con: The earthly criminal case that Charley investigates just wasn't that interesting to me, although the resolution was great fun. Usually I'm just as fascinated and emotionally drawn by the earthly case as I am with her dealings with the supernatural world, but this time, every time the earthly case popped up, I just wanted to get past it and back to the where-is-Reyes-and-what-has-Rey'azikeen-done-with-him plot.
So #12 ends with a cliffhanger after a plot shocker. Of course I can't wait to read #13, but I'm curious as to how Jones will end the series. Do demons-who-try-to-do-good get a happily ever after? #12 was a solid 4 stars; I'm hoping Jones can end the series with a worthy 5-star novel. #13 has an expected publication date of October 30, 2018.
I
Reyes was sent into the God Glass but returned as something different. Charley is trying to figure out how to get the old Reyes back. In the middle of all of this Charley gets called in to help with some strange murders; the victims all appear to be sensitive to the supernatural world.
I loved all the wonderful characters and the crazy, fast pace of this novel. I always wonder if there will be another series of books featuring Charleyās daughter in them.
I was a bit frustrated with the ending; it seems to be almost the same as what happened at the end of book 11. Now I have to wait forever to see what happens in book 13...arg.
Overall this was an amazing read, this series has been so much fun. I would definitely recommend to those who enjoy light-hearted investigative urban fantasy.
I really like this series but I think I liked this one the least. There was so much jumping around and this ending has a familiar ring to it with someone going missing at the end. Weāve seen it before several times. I will continue reading this series but I wish for once they could all
Again, I could not put this down and read it very fast. I know I will be purchasing the series in an audiobook and listen to it over and over. That is saying a lot as I really don't read a book a second time.
Thanks to Netgalley for an advanced copy.
Ms. Jones, you are wickedly good at this. You took my heart through the shadows, through the rubble, into the struggle for good/evil, life/death, love/faith, and then threw me into a dark ravine with no bottom in sight. I loved it, couldn't get enough, and want more pain and laughs.
if you love snark, romance, action, love and coffee read this series.
There are also a few story elements that keep getting repeated in the books - honestly, it's like hell has a revolving door - but Jones still manages to write a captivating, and hilarious, story that expands on biblical mythology while honouring its structure and its spirit. So in spite of not being everything it could be, it was exactly what I needed today.
5/5 stars.
3 Stars
In the penultimate book of the series, Charley Davidson faces her most difficult challenge yet as her husband, Alexander Reyes Farrow, isn't quite himself when he returns from the Hell dimension. In fact, he has literally come back as someone else, namely
Unfortunately, the series has not returned to its former glory. The conflict between Charley and Reyāaziel (Reyes) established at the end of the previous book does not live up to its potential mainly due to the fact that the twist is obvious from the start - no fan of the series (and only true fans are still reading) would believe that
Moreover, the story within a story that basically recaps every event and explanation provided thus far in the series is tiresome and tedious. It feels like Jones had a page count to fill and decided to repeat the entire plot to fulfill her contractual obligations.
Finally, Charley's flirtatious interactions with Garrett and Osh are over the top and not a little bit squicky, especially considering that
Overall, I'm hanging in there until the end because there is only one book left. I'm not holding my breath for a masterpiece.
