The beginning of the book sees Xar trying to escape the ghastly prison fortress of Gormincrag, where he has been imprisoned as a result of his actions in The Wizards of Once. Wish is also imprisoned, namely in the Punishing Cupboard of Queen Sychorax's Iron Warrior Fort, because her mother the

queen is expecting guests and is ashamed of showing off her peculiar daughter. And though it is highly unlikely that Xar and Wish will meet again, this is of course the type of story where these sorts of coincidences are entirely possible; naturally, the reader is also counting on the witches being defeated at the end of the series, and this won't be possible to achieve by either one of the characters on their own: only by overcoming past prejudices will they be able to unite and triumph over this ancient evil.

Once again the book is filled with adventure, magic, friendship, loyalty and courage, and a gentle humour. The author's wonderful hand-drawn illustrations add much value to the story being told, and there is much to enjoy here for children (and their parents). Though a worthy sequel to its predecessor, Twice Magic to me didn't quite have the emotional impact that Wizards of Once had, with its race against the clock to save Squeezjoos's life, and there's not enough of Squeezjoos, in my opinion. Though the darkness and impending danger from the Kingwitch are alluded to in the prologue, they take a step back throughout most of the novel, and are only present as a faint undercurrent, until the dramatic and earth-shattering finale in the courtyard of Castle Death.

While it is not essential that readers have read Wizards of Once, familiarity with the characters and events is encouraged, plus they'd be missing out on a rare treat. It goes without saying that I'll be lining up for the third, and presumably final, volume in the series.

Xar is the disappointing son of a wizard king - his magic hasn't come in yet. Determined to prove his worth, he goes on a foolish quest to capture a witch (even though no one believes they still exist) and ends up catching Wish, the disappointing daughter of a great warrior queen. Together, they
Show More
discover that witches DO still exist and the 13-year-olds have to decide whether to work together or maintain their society's long-standing hatred for each other. An adventurous and funny story with lots of magical creatures that subtly addresses the difficulties (and advantages) of being "different".

Picking up more or less where the last book ended, warrior Wish and wizard Xar must once again escape their parents (and their feud) to join together in hopes of defeating the evil witches that have appeared in the world after a long time of dormancy.

It's always hard to have a sequel that lives up

to the previous title; in this case a little bit of the magic (pun not intended, but it works) is lost. It felt like a great deal of the book was almost a sum up of what happened in the first (lengthy) title. Probably about a third of the book dealt with Wish and Xar separately, which is unfortunate but together they make a really fun team.

However, once the book really got going, then the charm of the previous title was back. There's adventure, humor, fantasy, and just a smidge of romance all mixed up in the pages of the story. The quirky illustrations help move things along, so this fairly thick tome reads pretty quickly.

The main story of this book is pretty well wrapped up by the end of it; however, it's clear that Cowell intends to write a third title for this series and sets up the ending for this. I can imagine that kids will really enjoy this series, especially those who are already fantasy fans. In all likelihood, I will pick up the next title in this series when it is published.

Super creative writing. I didn’t read the first book, but the storyline made sense without knowing any previous knowledge of what happened in the first book.

I have been borrowing most of the audiobooks I read from my local library. I read the first book last year in July. The books are so popular that I had to wait for a ... very ... long ... time to get my hands on book 2. It was worth the wait.

The adventure continues for our two heroes - Wish and

Xar. The plot is fast-paced. There's no time to get bored, too much is happening. And the characters are intense, funny, different, and work so well together even if they do argue and screw things up for each other.

I enjoyed the pace and the humour. And, again, I especially enjoyed David Tennant's reading of the book. He truly brings the book alive.

Again, totally recommended.
