As someone who grew up with reading stories of the Grimm brothers and adores dark fairy tales, I was looking forward to reading these short stories. However, as far as I can tell (I didn't finish the book), there isn't a so-called classic fairy tale among them: a lot of them are mash-ups or modern

twists on classic tales that I didn't get on with, such as Snow White mixed with Bluebeard, or a self-harming Red Riding Hood who turns into a werewolf. With the exception of Neil Gaiman's take on the troll in 'Three Billy Goats Gruff', they all lack appeal and atmosphere, and I gave up halfway through the fifth story and skim-read the rest to check if I could pick up the thread later in the book again. (Nope.)

These are dark stoies about curses and witches and how you really have to be careful what you wish for. They're darker that I usually go for but they're interesting and well-written and I finished it looking at the authors and looking for more of their books.
