Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran’s Chivalry adapts Gaiman’s short story of the same name, a charming story about the troubles a woman faces when she purchases the Holy Grail in a secondhand shop. Drawing upon Alberto Sangorski’s work as inspiration, Doran’s watercolor beautifully compliments

the tone of Gaiman’s story, evoking the illustrated medieval manuscripts of Arthurian tradition. The effect is a gorgeous edition for any fans of Gaiman’s work. Dark Horse similarly adapted Gaiman’s Troll Bridge, which appeared in his 1993 book, Angels and Visitations, alongside this same tale.

A charming tale of an elderly English widow who finds the Holy Grail in an Oxfam second-hand shop and buys it because, "It'd look nice on the mantelpiece." Soon enough, Sir Galahad shows up in full knight regalia on his steed ready to negotiate an end to his centuries-old quest but finds it

difficult to trade for it with something that would look just as nice on the mantelpiece.

Colleen Doran's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 1992 short story is lushly illustrated.

fun little story about an old woman finding the holy grail in a thrift shop and subsequently being visited by Galahad, whin she invites in for tea

A sweet and amusing tale of an old woman who buys the Holy Grail from the Oxfam store and is visited by Sir Galahad on quest. I'm glad that 1) I didn't notice the illustrator's name when I first read it and 2) that I read it on my b&w Kindle so I could appreciate the lyrical lines of the
Show More
illustration that are somewhat obscured by the coloring.
As to 1) months into reading A Distant Soil I found Colleen Dornan's oh so pretty illustration style made me a bit nauseous. But then her stated love of Howard Pyle's King Arthur almost had me forgiving her - even if her first encounter was not the self illustrated edition.
In Chivalry, Dornan indulges in saccharine beauty sparingly and gives us a few delightfully realistic old ladies.
As to 2) I found the coloring very distracting in the busy scenes, but lovely in the simple ones, but still that's what cost the book half a star for me.

A beautifully illuminated tale of a widow finding the holy grail in a charity shop and her encounter with Sir Galahad, who is on a grail quest, and what she eventually accepts in exchange for the holy grail. The tale is simple and whimsical. The artwork is amazing. The trials and tribulations the
Show More
illustrator went through to create this was an epic quest itself. It made me want to look through the book again to take in the details properly.

Terrific partnership of author and illustrator. Gaiman's sweet and simple story of a chance find in a charity shop partnered with whimsical, descriptive illustrations convey more than whimsy and humor. There is history, folklore and total enjoyment to be found.

This is a gorgeously illustrated version of a short story of Neil Gaiman’s that has been collected multiple times. Colleen Doran’s watercolor work brings it to life and makes it luminous. The story has a old woman finding the Grail in a charity shop and then having Galahad show up and offer her

many treasures for the Grail. This isn’t the first time they have collaborated together and I can’t wait to see if they do more.

This is small but perfectly formed. I listened to this in recording, with the narration and Mrs Whitaker played by Glenda Jackson. Mrs Whitaker discovers the Holy Grail under a fur coat in the Oxfam shop one Thursday morning after collecting her pension from the post office. She thinks it will look

nice on the mantlepiece, and so it does. She's then visited by Galahad, who is on a quest to discover the grail. Before she will let him in she asks to see some ID and his identification is a work of genius. He offers her precious objects she offers him a cup of tea and a sandwich for the journey home. It a fabulous mis-match, full of comedic moments, but pathos as well.
Just brilliant.

Mrs Whitaker finds the Holy Grail in a Charity Shop, under a fur coat and brings it home. Gawain looks to get it for his quest, she wants something to replace it.

It's a lovely story, beautifully drawn and marvellously rendered by Colleen Doran. Enchanting and entertaining.

A beautiful graphic treatment of my favorite Neil Gaiman short story - a story I've loved since I first read it around 25 years ago. The color palette is exactly right: light and summery, appropriate for a cozy cup of tea in the garden or the clarion call to storybook adventure. The

"illuminated"-style pages for Galaad's own stories are just ::: chef's kiss ::: perfect.
