Turbayne included a palette and brushes on this cover in honor of Scottish painter John Pettie, who excelled at painting heroic scenes from Scotland's history. His palette used a rich resonance of colour, and his art was known for its dash and vigour, the pictorial qualities taking precedence over the storytelling which had been the immediate concern of his predecessors.
