Description

"Like many before her that have never come back, she's made it to the Countess' castle determined to snuff out the horror, but she could never be prepared for what hides within its turrets; what unfurls under its fluttering flags. Emily Carroll has fashioned a rich gothic horror charged with eroticism that doesn't just make your skin crawl, it crawls into it."--Amazon.

A twisted fairy tale with gorgeous artwork. Just what we expect from the author and so well delivered.

The Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts fistfight in hell in this unsettling and gory tone piece.

I'm really disappointed. Emily Carroll is one of my favorite comic artists and horror authors, but this was just way too confusing. I usually don't mind twisty stuff, but I'm honestly not sure what this was even about. From start to finish, this relied solely on the self-indulgent aesthetic of

~spooky women~ to drive the narrative. I need more than pretty pictures to enjoy a story.

I just don't get why this got a print release when it makes absolutely no sense and many of Carroll's other work both look better and actually have a point.

I would buy full sized poster prints of pages from this book. Emily Carroll’s art is both minimalist and drop-dead gorgeous in eye-popping black, white and red. This slim volume is a dark fairy tale about a dangerous countess and the village woman who comes to her castle to stop her reign of

terror. The story is mysterious, sensual, and ultimately elliptical, but I loved the overall effect. I need to finally get around to reading Through the Woods, which I’ve owned for a few years now.

Stunningly beautiful artwork as always, and I do so enjoy the dark, simmering eroticism of Carroll's work, but the narrative here was a little muddy and difficult to follow. Usually Carroll's fairy tales haunt me after I finish reading them (to the point I've taught Through the Woods in fairy tale

courses several times now), but this one left me still hungry.
