Going into the middle book of this trilogy, I'll admit that I expected my patience to be tried, seeing as Chu ended the first book with multiple POV characters spread all over the map of his world. It turns out that, once one got past the opening scene of the book, which was very clever, one spends

most of the first half asking the eternal rhetorical question: "Are we there yet?" By the start of the last third of the book it finally does feel like one is getting somewhere, and Chu does give you a strong ending where the stakes for the end game are laid out. I will be looking forward to that concluding book, and not just out of a sense of relief.
