The story is set in the early 1900s in a fictional kingdom named T'ang in Southeast Asia. The protagonist of the story is a young American man named John Randolph, who travels to T'ang to work as a manager in a pearl company. The kingdom is ruled by a young and beautiful queen, who is admired by all her subjects. However, there are political tensions brewing in the kingdom, and John soon finds himself caught up in the middle of it all.As John navigates through the complex political landscape of T'ang, he falls in love with the queen's beautiful and intelligent cousin, Mei-li. However, their love is forbidden, and they must keep their feelings hidden. Meanwhile, the queen's advisor, General Wu, plots to overthrow her and take over the kingdom. John and Mei-li find themselves in the middle of the conflict and must fight to protect their love and the kingdom.
