Clorinda the cow has always dreamed of flying like a bird, so, with the help of her cow friend, Hop, and her human friend, Lenny, she constructs an airplane that actually takes flight! Although it soon crashes down, Clorinda does not give up. She decides to create other flying contraptions: a

rocket ship and a copter. Both take off successfully as the plane did, but both crash down just as quickly. Clorinda and her friends don't give up; their ultimate idea is to create a hot-air balloon. This time, their flight is a huge success! They fly all the way to England and meet the queen. There is only one problem: in their haste, they forget to bring Lenny along with them. Because he helped them become successful, they want to do something for them in return. When the queen asks what she can do for them, they request some of her tea to bring back for Lenny. When they get home, they proudly give Lenny the tea and promise him that they won't forget him the next time around. The book ends with a magical picture of the two cows and Lenny gathered for tea, talking of 'adventures, of friendship, and dreams.'

Robert Kinerk, Clorinda Takes Flight,(2007). NY: Simon and Schuster.

Clorinda is a lovely, adorable cow who dreams of flying, and with the help of her friends pig and Lenny, they try building a plane, rocket, and helicopter out of household parts; but all those attempts fail. Finally, they attempt

building a hot air balloon - Clorinda and the pig successfully take off, but unfortunately Lenny is forgotten on the ground. Clorinda and the pig are amazed with as they travel the sky past New York and on to London, where they land and meet the Queen. The illustrations closely follow the plot and the characters. The reader will get a good sense of Clorinda's desire to fly and her sense of adventure, and the use of warm, bright colors and soft, textured lines allow the reader to connect to the plot, setting, and characters very easily. The jacket cover is inviting, yet can be interpreted as a spoiler when the reader reads about the first three attempts of flight. The story effectively conveys the messages of friendship, team work, and perseverance. Great read-aloud for ages 5-8.

Almost as cute as the first Clorinda book, and I enjoyed how Clorinda doesn't give up here, and continues to work with her friends to acheive her dream of flying. Clorinda has a very supportive friend in Len! :)

Local notes

One afternoon while taking the sun, a cow named Clorinda casually notices the flight of a passing barn swallow. "Oh, how I wish I could fly like a bird," thinks Clorinda. So (never mind that a cow never has), Clorinda resolves to be the first and to show the world how it's done.

A sweet tale about following your dreams.
