This book is sheer, grand, glorious fun! Don Wood's illustrations are a sumptous feast for the eyes, constantly holding the reader's attention and bringing more depth and plot to a story fairly sparse on words. The plot revolves around a page's pleas to remove the king from the bathtub, with each

member of hte kind's court failing miserably at this task. Everytime the page enlists the help of an adult, the reader anxiously wants to push to the next page to see the fantastic drawings of the king in his bathtub, drawings filled with so much detail it's almost like a 'Where's Waldo?' scene. Audrey Wood's words lend to this stage of anticipation, with each court member enticing the king to ever greater feats of fun lunacy. The boy page himself trumps the adults in the end in figuring out a way to remove the king from the tub, a feat any child will enjoy and wish was his own in a world full of adults. Truly a very fun read for both young and old!

"Drip, Drop, Splash," / "Drip, Drop, Splash! / My Armor Soon Will Rust! / My Uniform Is Soggy Wet, / My Helmet Plume is Mussed! Ha! Hahaha! I'm so glad that I gave this one a second chance, after reading it on my morning train-ride the other day, and being somewhat less than impressed. What was all

the fuss about, I found myself wondering? Perhaps I just wasn't in the right mood? In any case, I decided this evening to try it again, this time with the accompanying six-track CD, which provides narration and (hilarious!) musical accompaniment, and I discovered that it was quite amusing after all. I confess: the knight's doo-wap number, quoted above, had me in hysterics! I couldn't stop giggling!

Chosen as a Caldecott Honor Book in 1986, King Bidgood's in the Bathtub provides an amusing bath-time story (especially with the added musical numbers!) sure to appeal to younger children with a taste for silly stories. The illustrations by Don Wood capture all of the fantastical doings, from King Bidgood's bath-side luncheon with the Queen to his fishing venture with the Duke, as well as the expressive faces of the all the "players" in the piece. Definitely one I would recommend, especially to children who don't realize how fun bathing can be - just be sure to get the edition with the CD! Drip, Drop, Splash," everyone!

King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub, is a story of a king who does not want to get out of his tub. The Page asks, “who knows what to do?” The knight tells the king it is time to battle, to which the king replies, “Today we battle in the tub!”. The queen yells to the king and tells him it is

time for lunch, again the king replies, “Today we lunch in the tub!” There are many other suggestions given by various members of the king’s castle. The Page ends up saving the day with a clever idea. This book won the Caldecott Honor in 1986. The pictures are colorful and lifelike, the illustrations add depth to the story. The pictures are extremely beautiful and detailed. This is a wonderfully illustrated book with a wonderfully written story to go with it.

My daughter really enjoys bath time, she doesn’t like to get out for anything. This is a great story to read to her . She enjoys the illustrations and can relate to the story of the king. This story could also teach children about problem solving which is a skill every child needs to learn

In a class room environment , students could write in their journals about what they would do in their bathtub if they were allowed to do anything they wanted. Another idea would be to ask children how they would of solved the problem of getting the king out of the bathtub.

I read this story to my Kindergarten class a few years ago, and they couldn't stop giggling! Based on their reaction, I give this book five stars.

This book is about a King who does not want to leave his bathtub full of bubbles. The Page is trying to figure out ways to get the King out of the tub and instead he has everyone come to him and have lunch and what not in the tub with him. At last someone has the idea to get him out by pulling the

plug and draining all the water.

I didn't really care for this book, except for the illustration. I didn't think that it really had a "plot" to keep anyone interested in the book. The illustration kept me going, but I did not care for the story line. This is one of those books where you would have to make up your own story to keep it interesting.

I do not know how to incorporate this book into a classroom setting. There is not an "educational" value to it one bit in my eyes. I would have it in the room just in case some child might be interested in reading it, but I would not know what to do with it.

I think my favorite part of this book was the beautiful illustrations. I also think that it did an excellent job at keeping all of the listeners active, by guessing what was going to take place. Overall, it was very good read, and I enjoyed it a great deal.

Funny book, Students could draw Kingbidgood in a bathtub doing something else.

Great for grades k-5. The king would not get out of the bath tub so every one joined him in the bathroom. Kids could write a story about what they like to do in the bathtub.

The Knight, Queen, Duke, and Court all try without success to get King Bidgood out of his tub, getting soaked in the process. Finally, the hardworking Page takes matters into his own hands and pulls the plug.

Beautifully illustrated, this young children's story is full of humour and charm. King Bidgood's in the bath and he won't get out - how can he be induced to do so? Many attempts are made, but only one is successful. Wonderful stuff.

King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub is a funny, silly story that portrays a King acting a lot like a child playing in the bathtub. The King battles, eats, fishes, and even dances in the bathtub. Everyone in his court tries to get him out of the bathtub, but the lowly page is the one who triumphs in the

end.

This book is a very silly story that would fit into the noodlehead folktale category. The main character is very silly in his escapades and somewhat believable of a selfish King that wants everything his way. The story flows well and I enjoyed this book.

I think it would be fun for the children to discuss what they would have the King do in the bathtub. The children could draw the King in their own fantasy, including who in the court would try to get him out of the bathtub.

King Bidgood's in the bathtub, and he won't come out! The page doesn't know what to do, so he gets all of the court to help. Each member of the court goes in to tell the king what he needs to be doing, but he says do it in the tub! Everyone ends up in the tub, and then the page pulls the plug!

This book was amazing because the pictures were so detailed and animated. Throughout the book the page is trying to get people to help him get King Bidgood out of the tub. They each come in with great ideas but nothing will work to get him out. The page finally gets him out the tub because he

pulled the plug. This story is amazing because the pictures tell the story.

A very witty book about a young page who cannot seem to get the king out of the bathtub. Everytime someone comes up with an idea the king just wants to do it in the tub. He has lunch in the tub, he battles in the tub, finally the young page figures out how to get him out. A very amusing book.

This is a book about a page that tries all day to get the king out of the bathtub. He sends in different people from the court in to try and get him out. The king responds by eating lunch, fighting a battle, fishing and other funny things. The only thing left the page could think of do is was pull

the plug and that worked! This is a very entertaining and animated story that kids of all ages would find enjoyable.

this book is a very simple read. its words are almost lyrical, it almost seems like it should be on a childrens song tape with background sounds af water splashing and crazy things happening. the pictures are absolutely beautiful, but also they are very funny because the illustrator took great

means to give emotion to each of the faces in the story on every page. it starts in the morning when king bidgood wont get out of the bathtub and the page boy asks the court what he should do. it seems that every one has an idea, but nothing is working, the king wants to do all of the suggestions in the tub. finally the page gets tired of it and pulls the plug. this book would be a good really for more or a art class because of the pictures. without the illustrations, this book wouldnt have much to stand on, they really make the book interesting.

Caldecott Honor Book. King does funny things in the bathtub. They battle, eat, fish, and dance in the tub. Magnificent art. Great way to point out adding details to pictures.

This is a delightful picture book for children with much to discover on every page. King Bidgood is enjoying his bath so much, he won't get out and instead has everyone join him there. Great fun~

This book is a Folklore picture book tale in Narrative voice that tells the story of a king that enjoys having a bath. A nice activity to do would be to discuss with kids what is okay and not okay to do in the tube.

King who does everything in the bathtub for the whole day and nobody can get him out...until the page comes up with a very good idea...

Gorgeously illustrated story of a king who won't get out of his tub, much to the dismay of the court. Excellent read-aloud.

Audrey Wood's King Bidgood's in the Bathtub is a fun, rollicking and engaging bathtime story, although for me, it is the marvelous illustrations that make this story special; the narrative, albeit lively and humorous, is somewhat predictable and rather mundane, especially when compared to the rich
Show More
detail of the illustrations. In fact, I could readily imagine the illustrations without the narrative, but I could not imagine the narrative without the illustrations. My LT friend Abigail points out in her own excellent review that the accompanying CD really makes the narrative come alive, but as my library copy of the book unfortunately does not come with the CD, I have not had the opportunity to listen to it and judge this for myself.

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub is, of course, primarily a humorous and silly bathtime story for younger children. However, I could also imagine using this story with slightly older children to perhaps discuss the many duties of a monarch, and why it might not necessarily be particularly beneficial or positive for a kingdom to have a monarch, a leader, who spends all his/her time soaking in the tub instead of governing, instead of working for the good of his/her kingdom. The amusing conclusion, and the fact that it is the King's page and not the Queen, the Knight, the Duke etc. who finally knows how to get King Bidgood out of the tub, could also be used to engender some interesting discussions regarding social position, the historic roles of servants and the class system.
