I did not like this as much as the rest of the Caudills I have read so far, but it was still pretty good. I thought it was a little slow to start with and I didn't particularly care for Leo which made it harder for me to buy into the story. While I think it was a good thing for Amanda to forgive

him, I just didn't have as much sympathy for him as I think Mass wanted me to. Also I would have liked to know what Leo did to fix things with the kid who was giving him a hard time, but it was really Amanda's story so glossing over that was somewhat understandable. Once I got used to the narrator I thought she did a fine job with good voice differentiation among the characters. Listened to Scholastic Audio edition narrated by Kathleen McInerney.

Amanda and Leo share a birthday and have been best friends for as long as they can remember. They always have their birthday party together until the year they turned 10 when they had a huge fight and stopped speaking. Now it's been a year and Amanda's turning 11... but something happens and every

time she goes to bed, she wakes up on her birthday again! Can Amanda and Leo figure out how to stop the loop or will they be celebrating their 11th birthday forever?

I liked the story, but it's not one of my favorites. I'd hand it to 4th-6th-graders who like realistic fiction like Andrew Clements.

Amanda and Leo were born on the same day in the same hospital. A coincidence? Maybe. Was it coincidence that finds them at the same party place to celebrate their children’s first birthday? This coincidence leads to a friendship that has them celebrating all of their birthdays together until

their tenth party. Amanda overheard Leo saying something to his new friends about her. With her feelings crushed, she leaves the party and goes home. That was the end of their friendship. A year later as they prepare to celebrate their 11th birthdays separately, something strange happens. Amanda finds out about Leo’s party and realizes that many of her guests have brought gifts and dropped them off at her party to attend his. When it is all over she goes to bed only to wake up the next day to find it is her birthday again.
In a story that reminded me of the movie “Groundhog Day”, Amanda discovers she is not the only one living the day over. Leo has the same problem. Together they must find out why this is happening to them and figure out how to fix this or else it will be their eleventh birthday forever.
This was a quick and easy read for me. I enjoyed it very much. I was reminded of the fragility of friendship. At that age it tends to be very easily broken and at times just as easily fixed. The author did a great job of making her characters very believable and the story line carried you along with not gaps. I know many of my students would love this book. I will gladly recommend it to them.

A cute story about Amanda and Leo, a pair of 5th graders who were born on the same day and became best friends who spent every birthday together until the year they turned 10. When Amanda overheard Leo saying something not-so-nice about her to his friends, her feelings were hurt and her friendship

When Amanda overheard Leo saying something not-so-nice about her to his friends, her feelings were hurt and her friendship with him destroyed. Now she faces spending her first ever birthday without him.

However, when strange things begin to happen to Amanda on her eleventh birthday, she realizes that Leo is the only person who understands what she's going through and the only person who can help put things back to normal. The two seem to be reliving their 11th birthday over and over again, and no matter how they try to make things different, they can't figure out why they are in this time loop or how they will ever break free of it.

This "Groundhog Day" like scenario - wherein characters experience the same day over and over again until they figure out why they can't seem to move forward - is cute, although the reasons behind it are a bit light. Too, some things don't make sense. For example, Amanda has only played the drums in her basement, is 100% self-taught and has never performed for anyone, yet she can read music well enough to impress a pair of older rock band members and even successfully try out for the marching band. The characters are supposed to be 5th graders yet they are already in middle school (not sure what part of the country has 5th grade as part of middle school instead of elementary), and although it is supposedly the end of the school year (June 5), no mention is made of this.

These minor quibbles aside, it's an okay read for older grade-school kids but probably boring for middle schoolers.

Fairly well-done 'tween adaptation of the concept also seen in the movie Groundhog Day." Addresses issues of friendship and growing up. I do wish the characters had been a little more complex, richer - more real to me."

I had read a good review of this book, but to me, it was only worthy of an "eh". Not bad, not great, just okay. Somehow this book mustered up an Maine Student Book Award nomination in the 2010-2011 year.

Children's fiction/audio. It's really difficult to pull off this kind of "groundhog day" story without wearing it out. The author does ok with it, considering the mediocre plotline.

This book 11 Birthdays, is very weird at first. When you start to get in depth into the book, you can understand more. It's about a boy named Leo and a girl named Amanda. They have had their birthdays together ever since they were 1. On their tenth birthday together, Leo and his friends
Show More
go up into his room. Amanda goes to the bathroom and overhears Leo say hurtful things about her. Amanda does not talk to Leo for a whole year and on her 11th birthday, well if you read it you'll see!

Realistic fiction/sci-fi story about 11-year old Amanda who will be celebrating her first birthday without best friend (and fellow birthday boy), Leo. There was an unkind remark made, at Amanda’s expense during the last joint birthday party that has created the year- long rift between the two
Show More
friends. Middle school angst, relationships, and a weird “time warp,” which has Amanda and Leo reliving the same eleventh birthday, day over and over again allows the two to come to terms with their problem and realize life has more to offer than feuding and holding hard feelings. Snappy, realistic dialogue, and a true sense of what is held dear to an eleven-year-old makes this a great read for 4th-6th graders.

A story where the main character gets traped in the same day over and over again until she makes up with her ex-best friend.

I really liked this book. I liked the end when Amanda said to Leo, "It's a date" and the mom said "You two are way too young to be dating." I listened to it on tape from the library. I'm really glad my mom got it for me.

Wouldn’t it be great if your birthday was everyday? Well, maybe not if you have a pop quiz, you don’t make the gymnastics team, half your friends don’t come to your party, your mom gets fired from her job, and worst of all, you can’t celebrate it with your (former) best friend. What if you

had to re-live this horrible day again, and again, AND again?! That’s exactly what 11-year old Amanda has to do- until she and her friend Leo, who was born on the same day, can figure out how their family’s mysterious past might provide the crucial answers needed to help them get their day just right. This empowering tale of finding out what true friendship is and how personal relationships are affected by even the slightest of actions, is cleverly highlighted by witty humor, audacious (and sometimes defiant) deeds, escalating character development and just a little bit of mystery. Intriguing to both male and female middle school children this skillful story gives the readers the rare opportunity to live vicariously through the characters’ days of “no consequences” while trying to figure out why this crazy experience is happening at all.

This book is fiction. Its about a gril named Amanda and about a boy named Leo.They were the best of friends until Leo may have said something on their tenth birthday, that could change everything. A year went and their eleventh birthday was here, and they still hadn't said anything to eachother.

Amanda and Leo are fated to repeat their 11th birthday over and over again, unless they can figure out why their eleventh birth day keeps repeating, regardless of what they do.
Not one of my favourite Mass books, but still enjoyable.

Cute! Amanda is stuck reliving her 11th birthday, a sort of Groundhogs Day type of plot. When she discovers that her estranged best friend Leo is going through the repetitions too, they work together to try to get time to start up again.

Very creative premise and a winning heroine.

In the book "11 birthdays" by Wendy Mass; the main characters Amanda and Leo were best friends. They had every birthday together and spent almost everyday together. Until their tenth birthday when Leo’s friend said some mean things about Amanda and she got mad at Leo. Their eleventh birthday was
Show More
the first birthday they were going to have apart from each other. On their birthday Amanda wakes up to a sponge bob balloon flying around in her room. What Amanda thinks is going to be a great day, party, and weekend never really comes. She was right until she went to bed on her birthday and woke up the next morning to find out that it was her birthday again. As days pass its always their birthday. After days they found out there is a mystery to be uncovered about their ancestors past to get their birthday to stop repeating everyday.
11 birthdays is a fun book to read. Getting clues and trying to figure out the mystery as you read the book. Also they mystery to what happened to their ancestors. 11 birthdays is a fun book for people who like figuring out mysteries. I would definitely recommend this book and I would definitely read it again.

This book is about a girl named Amanda and a boy named Leo. Leo and Amanda have known eachother since the day they were born since they were born on the same day. Ever since their first birthday they have celebrated it together. Until their tenth birthday party. Leo was up in his ro with some of

his friends when he said the only reason he hung out with Amanda was because he felt bad for her because she had no other friends, but Leo did not know that Amanda was at the door and heard the whole conversation. From that day on Amanda never said a word to Leo. On their eleventh birthday, the two did not celebrate it together. Then next say was still Amanda and Leo's birthday though. Amanda and Leo have been cursed. Will they be able to fix it?

This is a good book for kids who have a bestfriend that they are really close to. This is a also a good book for people who love happy endings . I really enjoyed this book and I hope you will to.

this was adorable. Amanda has a mostly unpleasant 11th birthday, and then wakes up the next morning to find that she's living her birthday day over and over again. And even though we all already know why -- because she has to figure out what she needs to change in
Show More
order to get to the day after her birthday -- it's still very winsome and cute.

Grade: B+
Recommended: I liked this because it's solidly a middle reader in terms of level and interest and still manages to keep the story very lively.

Wendy Mass is such a great story-teller and never panders to her (pre)adolescent audience -- it makes for enjoyable reading and always makes me wish I thought of that idea! This book is a Groundhog Day-esque repetition of Amanda and Leo's 11th birthday. They have been friends since birth, thanks to
Show More
the influence of a quirky wise woman who works a little magic. After a misunderstanding and rift at their 10th birthday, the two must reconcile not only for themselves but for the greater good of their community. How they do this (do-over! and over!) is sweet and entertaining. I love that the story still promotes girl-boy friendships just as hormones are starting to kick in.
