This book would be good just to have in my personal classroom library for the students to be able to enjoy. This story is a series and this particular one is where elephant and piggie are best friends. Elephant tells piggie about the time that he broke his trunk. This sparks piggie to create a
Show More
story of her own. This book is very simplistic and would be good for fluency practice.

Mo Willems is a master at creating humorous scenarios and delightful characters. While the book is long and not broken up into chapters or mini stories as with other early readers, there are few words on each page. I like this format, since a child can feel accomplishment at reading such a "long
Show More
book" after completion.

Mo Willems has a way of taking something simple and making it brilliant. The tales of Elephant and Piggie span many volumes, all of which come to life with colourful illustrations and funny situations.

In I Broke My Trunk!, Elephant broke his trunk, and is explaining how he did it to Piggie. He
Show More
tells Piggie all the unbelievable things that he had on this trunk. Each experience gets sillier and sillier until the way he broke is trunk is revealed.

This is a book for very young children - I read it to a toddler and he enjoyed it. I believe that children, just starting to read, will also enjoy these stories. Of course, parents reading to young kids will probably be entertained as well.

Even though they are simple, the illustrations are expressive and will bring a smile to the faces of parents and kids alike. I Broke My Trunk! is a 2012, Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor.

I liked that it was a cute easy read and that the text consisted of the two characters dialog and nothing more.

This book is a funny story that stars Gerald and Piggie from Mo Willems Elephant & Piggie books. In this book Gerald comes to Piggy with a broken trunk. When Piggie asks what Gerald did to break his trunk, Gerald tells an elaborate story of all of the things he tried (and succeeded) to lift with
Show More
his trunk. It becomes apparent rather quickly that lifting these things is not what caused Gerald to break his trunk and Gerald finally admits that he was so excited that he could lift those things that he ran over to tell Piggie and he slipped and broke his trunk!

Newbery buzz for THIS? *boggle* I don't get it. This is a book for kids who like their books comfortable and easy to digest, just like a cartoon sitcom. Kids who move on to Junie B. Jones, then V.C. Andrews, then the Twilight series, then mass-market paperbacks.

The illustrations are pedestrian at
Show More
very best. The repetition and rhythm are decent, but... oh, hell, I'm pretty sure that Robert McCloskey & Ezra Jack Keats ruined me completely for these modern day half-assed, phoned-in, comic-book-influenced, cheap-shot books. Hey, you kids, get offa my lawn!

What would you do for a friend? The book, I Broke my Trunk! By Mo Willems gives us one example of what a true friend would go through for another friend. This book could be used in classrooms of Pre-K through first with many discussions based on the question: How close are you to your friends? This
Show More
innocent and heartening book tells the story of how Gerald broke his nose as he is telling his best friend Piggie. This book really captured my attention when I found out how Gerald actually broke his nose! Through many authentic emotions and suspense to the true story, as a reader, one becomes a friend of Gerald and Piggies.

It's obvious I love Mo Willems for his hilarious and sometimes ridiculous plot lines. This is another one. The simplistic yet expressive drawing of the characters tell the story as much as the words do. That Gerald lifted everybody on his trunk, but running to Piggie and falling is what breaks it,
Show More
is unexpected and very funny. No real moral lesson here, unless its just to watch where you are going.
I can see why this won the Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor. Just like Fox in Sox or One Fish Two Fish, it helps you read with stories that are silly, but use words that help you read better.

In this Elephant and Piggie book, Elephant has to explain to Piggie how he broke his trunk. After finally telling a long, funny, crazy story, Piggie runs off to share it with his friends.

I Broke My Trunk! is another wonderful Elephant and Piggie book written by Mo Willems. This time, Gerald shows up with a bandage on his trunk and quite the story to tell Piggie about how it happened. Gerald begins telling the story of having to hold something heavy up on his trunk as a trick, and
Show More
people being amazed by it. Gerald continues to say that then he had to balance two things on his trunk! Each time Gerald stops part of the story, Piggie asks, "So, is THAT how you broke your trunk?" and Gerald has to say no and continue on. Finally, the story ends with Gerald admitting that after all of his tricks, he tripped and fell, and that is how he broke is trunk. This Elephant and Piggie story is full of laughs and surprises that all young children would enjoy.

I like the simplicity of this book and how short it was. The animals used in the story create a comical aspect of the book, which was enjoyable to read.

Summary - Elephant and Piggy are best friends. Piggy worries when Gerald (Elephant) breaks his trunk. Through the whole story Gerald explains what happens. It's funny because he has a super long explanation.

Reflection - I think it is funny that he drags out what happened. It makes you want to
Show More
keep reading it to find out. Kept my kids entertained through the whole book.

Classroom Ideas -
1. Let the kids tell me a story of something that happened to them.
2. Look at the pictures to the book.

Gerald, the gray elephant with glasses, shares with Piggie how his trunk broke because she really wants to know. So she listens attentively and with expectation to Gerald's crazy story. It's a delightful conversation between these two characters that will hold young people's attention. The scenarios
Show More
that follow next leave the reader laughing aloud and adults will enjoy, too. The illustrations are simple in style and adorable. I especially like the one of Gerald lifting Hippo on his trunk. Soon Rhino shows up and yes, you guessed it. Plus, add Rhino's sister, along with her piano. Piggie impatiently asks, "How did you break your trunk?!" You've just got to get this funny book and read the conclusion. My 6 year old grandson loves this one. I do, too!

My very first day of college, my professor read this book to the class and i have been in love with Mo Willems and Elephant and Piggie ever since. This book is pure fun, it keeps readers or listeners entertained by dragging out the ridiculous predicaments Gerald encounters. Will definitely be a

The facial expressions in this one! And it really keeps the suspense going as it plays out what happened to elephant's trunk one palmwidth of rope at a time.

Find out how Gerald broke his trunk! Watch Piggie listen to his "long, crazy story" and see the effect it has on them both.

A cute Elephant and Piggie book that centers around how Gerald broke his trunk. As he recounts the rather long, but amazing, story to Piggie, Piggie keeps interrupting him, guessing each time that what Gerald had just said was the reason behind the broken trunk.
