Cat Poems is a small anthology of poems about, you guessed it, cats. Selected by Myra Cohn Livingston, an award winning poet and anthologist, the poems show the inherent nature of a cat and all of its many facets: the cuddly cat; the feisty cat; the playful cat; the independent cat; the beautiful

cat, etc. Two poems really stood out as my favorites.

The first is Catnip, by Valerie Worth. Catnip describes a cat on catnip, turning into a “Lunatic acrobat”. Anyone who has ever seen a cat on catnip knows that this is true. I regularly give my cats “The Nip” as we call it, and the cats then put on quite a show. Any child with a cat will love this poem, and beg the parental units to run out and buy some. Then, the fun begins.

The second poem I loved was by T.S. Elliot, former Poet Laureate of England, called The Song of the Jellicles. It is written in a rhyme scheme and meter that makes it a song. A Jellicle Cat is a black and white cat who is playful and fun, with a happy face and a penchant for dancing in the moonlight. This is a fun poem that any child would love to chant over and over again. The description is so spot on that one can envision the cats, even with out the lovely illustrations that accompany the poem.

The anthology is illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman, a Caldecott Winner. All of the happy pictures of cats give great visual representations of each of the nineteen adorable poems. Each illustration is done in black and white, either in charcoal or pencil, and accented in a brownish orange, all cat colors. Three Stars.

Cat Poems is a collection of poems put together that talk about cats. In the poems they talk about the different types of cats and their daily activities. The poems describe the cats hunting, washing themselves, sleeping and playing.

This book is a must for all cat lovers. Also, children will

gravitate toward these poems because they have cute illustrations in black and white.

A great ideal to do with this book is to read aloud to children so they can learn to love poetry. Also, teachers can have kids come up with rhyming words that can be used in the poems.

This collection of poems is focused on the topic of cats. Most of the poems used alot of rhyme and rhythm to keep the reading smooth. The imagery used was easy to visualize and could even been applied to my cats at home.
I found this book very amusing and easy to read.
I would use this book to tie
Show More
into pets the children may have at home and maybe see if they could use the same kind of imagery to describe something funny that their pets do at home.
