Description

Anthology of 100 stories which are fairly representive of the production and reception of short fiction in Brazil in the last century. The 1900-30 period and each decade afterwards have short introductions and 13-20 stories each. Beginning with Machado de Assis's famous "Father Against Mother" in 1906 and ending with F. Bonassi's ironic "15 Scenes of Discovering Brazils [sic]." With its exuberant tone, style, and theme, the anthology successfully celebrates 500 years of writing. A few authors are neglected, e.g., Lobato and Maximiano Campos (see item #bi2001004405#). Most notable is the absence of Joa o Guimara es Rosa due to his family's refusal to participate.
