Scaredy Squirrel is back. This is a charming character who I've followed through a couple of books. I like the author's voice (it's funny) and the illustrations are bold and exciting (these claim to glow in the dark!)

This is a delightful story that highlights facing you fears. The silly outcomes and big vocabulary will challenge and encourage kids to face their fears while learning new things.

This book was great. Both the text and illustrations were fantastic. It was a fun way to look at the very scary childhood issue of bad dreams. I found myself reading this with a smile on my face. The premise is that Scaredy Squirrel cannot ever go to sleep for the fear of having a bad dream of one
Show More
of his many fears (unicorns, fairies, bats, etc). He very methodically plans out how to never sleep by keeping himself busy with activities as well as planning a full blown attack on the subjects of his dreams. The illustrations make humorous the side effects of not sleeping as well as depicting the intricate plan of attack keeping this book light-hearted. In the end, the squirrel finally sleeps from exhaustion and realizes he is O.K. The author puts in some adult humor with Scaredy Squirrel consulting his horoscope for guidance as well as in the end deciding to go with more the more reliable advice of fortune cookies. Also the planned attack on the dream characters was rather amusing with many details and great illustrations to support the effort. I enjoyed that this book looked at scary dreams that children have and made it funny and silly. The illustrations were detailed but simple including a glow in the dark smile on the cover.

I love the way that this book is written and the art/graphic design format too! This book would really appeal to my third grade students becasue it has a similar layout books like Diary of a Whimpy Kid and The Best Week Ever. It seems more like a mix between a comic book and picture book. I think
Show More
it also makes kids understand that it is ok to be afraid of the dark and that sometimes their imaginations can get the best of them. This book could serve as a guide onhow to handle being afraid of the dark! I just realized that this is the third book so I want to go and read the other ones as well!

Scaredy Squirrel doesn't sleep because he is afraid of nightmares. He does many things to keep himself awake, until one night when he reads in his horoscope that all of his dreams will come true. He makes an elaborate plan to battle his nightmares, but ends up finally falling asleep amidst the
Show More
chaos. When he wakes up he learns that it is okay to sleep, and overcomes his fear. Scaredy is pretty enduring, and this is a subject that pretty much every kid can relate to.

This like many of the other Scaredy Squirrel is great for bringing fears to life. Squirrel makes fears seem manageable and teaches the use of problem solving to conquer ones fears. This book can be used to talk about fears, rational, and create an open dialogue for how to deal with fear.

Finally, getting the hang of how to read Watt's books. Earlier reads I found difficult to appreciate with so much going on. Certainly see the appeal of this series as Scaredy overcomes his fear of going to bed.

Super fun book! I think this book could be read at any reading literature circle. I am sure the students would be laughing at all the things Scaredy Squirrel does in order not to sleep. This book may also be a good book to use to help those who are afraid of sleeping or darkness see that sleeping
Show More
is not only a necessity, but also something that someone does not need to be afraid of.

This is a story about a little squirrel named Scaredy, who is afraid to sleep in the night. What I have always enjoyed about Melanie Watts Scaredy series is the illustration along with the variety of displays she uses to convey the storyline. An example of this would be her use of checklists,
Show More
horoscope charts etc. The story appeals to any child young or older because it is FUNNY!!

Scaredy Squirrel tries to conquer his fear of nightmares by creating an elaborate plan to stay up all night.

RESPONSE: I thought this book was a great way to get children talking about their fear of nightmares and to recognize that they are not alone in that. It also features Scaredy's detailed
Show More
plans that are hilarious themselves.

THEMES/CONCEPTS: imagination, fears, planning

Scaredy Squirrel does not want to sleep because of all the things he is scared of, so he doesn't sleep and experiences all the side effects of sleep deprivation. When his horoscope tells him that all his dreams will come true at midnight, he devises a plan to help him combat his bad dreams so he
Show More
can get to his good ones. It doesn't quite work, and tires him out enough so he falls asleep. When he wakes up he feels all the benefits of a good night sleep, and is no longer scared,

I gave this book 4 stars because well it's Scaredy Squirrel. I read it to my own children and they loved it. I could read this book to my 5th grade class during my mentor sentences lesson time. I think they would enjoy it.

This book would be great to use in the classroom for teaching children about the importance of sleep. Melanie highlights the negative side of night getting sleep as well as the positive side of getting some rest. The books story is very great but the illustrations really made the book. The way the
Show More
pages were laid out were great and it had many different styles for the layout as well. This made the book easy to follow along with.
