An alphabet of annoyances by a busy buzzing fly. Gammell's brightly colored illustrations complete this great rhyming story.

This is a unique story with very different illustrations. The colors are bright, powerful, and almost flourescent. This is a good read aloud book.

I really liked this book. It has goes through each letter of the alphabet. It also has really good pictures in it. It looks like paint is splattered all over the place. It shows many different animals telling a fly to go away because it is bothering them. I would use this book in a younger class
Show More
because of the letters of the alphabet.

This book would be appropriate for kindergarten or first grade because it points out the letters of the alphabet. It has rhyming in it as well.

This is a great picture book and very appropriate for Kindergarten and First grade. It tells a story of a fly, but goes through the whole alphabet. It used words that goes with each letter to help children associate letters and words.

Old Black Fly is a good example of the traditional alphabet book. The old black fly is making trouble all over the house and all through the alphabet. He ate the crust on the apple pie and bothered the baby and made her cry. This rhythmic story can capture pre-schooler to first graders and become a
Show More
favorite. Alphabet letters are printed in large block letters and are bolded on each page so they easily stand out. Readers(pre-k to first grade) can take turns finding the letters of the alphabet as you read through the story.

This book is a rhyme book about a fly who makes messes and causes distruction. The pages are very colorful, and the colors are beautiful.
My daughter loves the rhyming, and read it along with me. She thought the story was funny because the fly made such a mess in the house.
I would use this story in
Show More
the classroom to teach rhymes. I would read the book, and ask the students to make their own rhymes.

My daughter and I read this book together. She loved the mean little fly who kept being bad. He 'bothered the baby', 'pestered the parrot' and 'snoozed on the quilt.' Each time he did something mean we would read 'shoo fly, shoo fly, shoo,' which had my daughter cracking up. At the end of the story
Show More
the mean fly got swatted, so he will not be bad anymore.

Lots of repetition and a great refrain-- fun to read and fun to play - this is a great auditory read a loud. A big hit with the preschool crowd -- after they got over the
Show More
initial shock of old black flies untimely demise-- they loved it.
Steve Gammell's illustrations are, as always, bright and powerful.

I thought this was a really good book to read to your class if your trying to teach about music. You can sing the book to them and get them to echo different parts so they will stay intuned with the book. This book has amazing pictures as well which the children will love!

Old Black Fly is an ABC rhyming book that depicts a fly's journey and unfortunate bad day. The illustrations are an excellent companion to the story. The illustrations enhance the concept and make the book enjoyable to read and view. They are very colorful and exaggerated. Overall, it is a fun book

to read with students.

The colors are amazing!! They look to be paint splatters than the drawings were incorporated within them. It was almost like playing hide and seek with the fly!! The book did a great job at doing the alphabetical and having a story line to it. It's great for kindergartens during story time.

Very good ABC book in my opinion. I would use it as a regular teaching tool. The art is fantastic in that it really keeps your attention without losing the primary focus of doing your ABC's. The book even has a simplistic story line to follow, which is difficult to find sometimes in conjunction
Show More
with good art that doesn't detract from its purpose (at least in my experience).

Nothing drives a family crazy than an old black fly, causing chaos.

Fun interactive story with great illustrations, it reminds me of the story, the Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. It is a continuous story that includes all the letters of the alphabet in a very creative way. The illustrations are surprising, engaging, and at times scary.

A nice concept book. It starts with a poem that says that the old black fly is buzzing around and he has had a very busy day. It goes throughout the whole alphabet using rhyme and rhythm. It is the story of and old fly that does different things like for instance " He ate on the crust of the Apple
Show More
pie, He crawled in the spills from the Olive oil can, He landed on her table, flap, flip, flap. ZZZZ ZZZZ ZZZ. I liked the fact that every couple of letters the author uses a motif to keep the interest of the reader. He says Shoo Fly! Shoo Fly! Shoo.
The author ends the book with another poem saying that the old black fly's done buzzing around and he won't be bad no more.

The old black fly zooms around the house pestering everyone- doing things in alphabetical order of course! Finally, he is swatted and shall bother people no more.
This book would be good when introducing the letters of the alphabet, or for teaching young children to create a list of things.

The concept of this book is to look at all the ABC, but also be an interactive book at the same time. This helps kids get involved more with learning the ABC's. This book as a theme of a black fly going on an adventure through the ABC's. I would use this In my classroom at a young age to be
Show More
interactive with the kids and also help them remember the ABC's.

I enjoyed the artwork in the Old Black Fly and Hey, Pancakes. The artwork tells a story and in particular the journey of the fly through the home is illustrated with excellence. The story is just simple and poetic. The illustrations enhanced the theme by mapping out the journey and the frustrations
Show More
of the people and animals the fly encounters.
