Big idea: It's more fun to play with your family than watch TV

I loved the illustrations-the bubbies were sepia-ish and dressed in pastels, the food was bright "crayola 8 box" colors, the TV was navy and white, and the bubble wrap was bright blue. An interesting use of color and a somewhat limited
Show More
color palate.

The moral was to play with your family, even when grown ups are boring and just want to watch TV. This is illustrated by Chloe saying her family is "the worst family" and going and playing with a box and bubble wrap by herself. Soon her 20 siblings join her and they all have a lot of fun. Her parents are watching TV though and just tell them to quiet down. They do, but keep playing. After all the kids go to bed, there is a frame of the dad playing with bubble wrap.

Chloe is the story of a bunny who lives in a large bunny family. At the end of each day the family plays together. One day, father bunny brings home a television. Watching T.V. takes the place of together play time. Chloe is angry and instead of watching with her family, takes her younger sister
Show More
and plays with the bubble wrap and box that came with the T.V. They pretend they are on T.V. Soon, all her brothers and sisters want to play with her and her imaginary T.V. The father tells them all to pipe down so he can hear the T.V. and then sends them to bed. The last picture is a view from the outside looking in the windows of the house. In one room, the bunny kids are sleeping while the father, in a separate room, playing with the bubble wrap.

I really enjoyed this book. Chloe is a bunny who has several brothers and sisters, and she considers herself to be “in the middle”. Chloe’s position (or her perceived position) in the family is very symbolically depicted by a drawing of Chloe in the middle of the page, surrounded by a circle
Show More
of her family members. The other illustrations are detailed and descriptive but also adorable. For example, I loved the cute little bunny who is a baby bunny dressed in a bunny suit (the way humans dress their babies in bunny suits). The drawings depict the action but also have a symbolic side, like the drawing of Chloe being “in the middle” of her family members, or the drawing of all of Chloe’s sisters surrounding her in her bed at night while the text speaks warmly of her sisters “snuggled all around her”. This book has a lot of appeal with its adorable bunny drawings and its text that radiates family love with every word. The lessons of “family comes first” and “imagination over technology” are really valuable for children of every age, and I think they come through very clearly without being spoken outright. The adorable characters, the valuable lessons, and the feeling of family love on every page make this a worthwhile book for children of all ages. It would be a good read-aloud for either a classroom or a family. I would recommend this book to parents as a treasured bedtime read aloud for young children.

Chole had 10 older and 10 younger brothers and sisters. One night her dad came home with a tv after dinner and everyone crowded around to watch it. There was no room for Chloe, and Bridget the youngest sibling, so they played with the box and bubble rap that the tv came in. They had so much fun
Show More
that all the kids wanted to play with it instead of watching the tv. They went to bed dreaming of playing in the box and it was the best night ever. This book would be a good lesson for younger schooled children (preschool - first) to show them that doing what everyone else does is not always the most fun thing. You can have fun with other toys or use your imagination to make a box or bubble wrap into a fun experience. I feel the theme of this book not going with the norm because kids need to know that it is okay to be yourself and not have to always have the next best thing to fit in.

Chloe is a bunny that has 20 siblings. She loves evening family time and playing with all of her siblings. But her dad brings home a tv and family time becomes time in front of the tv. She ends up showing her family how fun it is to play with the box and bubble that the tv came in, after turning
Show More
off the tv.

This is a book that shows how fun it can be to use your imagination when you "unplug". In a time where we all have gadgets we're glued to, Chloe shows that it's still important to spend time with loved ones.

This book tells the story of Chloe the bunny and a typical night with her family. Chloe is from a large family and tends to be a bit of an outcast because she is in the middle. However, one night during television time, her and her baby sister discover the joys of bubble wrap and pretty soon the
Show More
whole family is in on the fun! This is a great story that highlights family diversity and imagination.

Nice story to share together with the family.

Chloe, the charming bunny from Henry in Love, gets her own story in which she proves to her siblings that the best fun comes from the imagination.

Good story message here to play as a family instead of watching television. Popping bubble wrap is a mixed bag, though, fun for some but irritating as heck to others!
LibraryThing member ZacWoodruff
I liked the style of illustration here. The bunnies were very nicely drawn and the pastel colors are bold, but light at the same time. The story is very cute. Sometimes adults feel like bringing in more technology is so "fun" for the family, when all it does is get everyone to sit down and not pay
Show More
attention to each other. This is how Bridgette feels too. I like how she found bubble wrap to play with, I remember playing with that, and watching with my kids play with it as well. I like how in the end, her dad is downstairs playing with it after everyone's asleep.

I think this book would be great for a child who is a middle kid and can sometimes feel left out. It can show them they can create things everyone will want to do and will be able to do together. I really liked the story and the illustrations. I think it was great how the siblings all had different
Show More
outfits so you could tell them all apart. I think this book is also great in showing that you don't need tv to have fun.

"Chloe" is a fantastically illustrated story done in color pen-and-ink. It presents the story of a happy family of 23 rabbits, a mom and dad, ten older brother and sisters, and ten younger brother and sisters. They always engage in family fun time after dinner until one day father comes home with a
Show More
television and everything changes. Chloe, the middle child, is supremely disappointed with her family and essentially goes on strike. She disrupts her family's television time, and gets all the other children to engage in their fake tv and popping bubble wrap. Father tells them all to go to sleep. USE: that television is not the only way to have fun; also for parents, that television is not the best after dinner activity.

Probably one of my favorite picture books (newer picture books) yet. I love that it took a common idea of families being revolved around technology (in this case a TV) as their family time and showed how you can make family time fun without the use of technology. The main character Chloe, got upset
Show More
when her family went from playing games as their family time to getting a brand new TV. She made the family come back to their traditional family time by using the TV box to make a pretend TV. Thought the soft feel in the illustrations was cute as well.

Chloe has a lot of brothers and sisters and she loves family time with all of them. One day her father bring's home a surprise, a new tv. Everyone gathers around the tv, but nothing interest them. Instead they want to play with the box's and the bubble wrap. This story was one that i enjoyed. I

loved the big family aspect of the book.

Coming from a huge family with twenty brothers and sisters, Chloe loves spending “family fun time” with her family at the end of every day, but Chloe needs to remind her family how to have real fun when her family becomes distracted by the new television that her Dad brings home. McCarty
Show More
creates a light hearted narrative with well paced text that will have children of all ages jumping forward to the next page. The text placement is simple and consistent which make this a good choice for one-on-one reading with a beginning reader. The playful narrative and sound effects also make this story a good choice for a group read aloud or story time. The content of the story make this a perfect choice for a bedtime story or a family-themed story time. The illustrations are ink drawings also by McCarty with a variation of achromatic and light colors. The drawings achieve unity in the story with detailed scenes and isolated illustrations. The drawings expand upon the sparse text, highlight specific moments in the story and keep the narrative moving. This book is a good pick for bedtime read alouds or a family themed story time. Additionally, this is a great choice for a parent looking for a light hearted book on family.

Anyone that has loved the sparseness and inherent sweetness of Peter McCarty’s previous work, like Henry in Love or Hondo & Fabian, will be attracted to the titular bunny at the heart of one of his latest books, Chloe. Fans of Henry in Love might even recognize Chloe, as she first appeared in
Show More
that same book.
Chloe is the middle child—and proud of it—of twenty siblings. McCarty, too, grew up as a middle child in a large family, and one can clearly see his experiences reflected in the story. McCarty’s textured pencil-sketch drawings of Chloe’s family provide a glimpse into the personalities of its members without needing extraneous explanations: from a pair of glasses to a set of bracelets to a football jersey.
The essence of Chloe, is a tale of a family finding joy together by the simplest of means. When a new distraction threatens to disrupt what Chloe calls “family fun time,” her solution to the issue taps into a particular delight that many children will recognize and love. Set at the end of an eventful day for the family, Chloe is clearly meant as a bedtime story, and one with an ending warm enough to sooth any restless soul.

A short book about a young bunny who is the middle child in a family with ten older and ten younger siblings. Chloe, the middle bunny, loves after-dinner family fun time, which is threatened to become extinct when her dad brings home a TV. She restores this time, though, when she lures her family
Show More
members into playing with the bubble wrap and box that the TV came in.

Appealing to young children and parents alike because of its theme which focuses on spending quality family time together, this book is also visually appealing, with personified animals in pastel colors and cleverly drawn illustrations.

The book was funny and cute. The artwork was clean and simple. I like the shading because it adds more detail to the characters.

I did not find much interesting about this book, other than the adorable illustrations. It's about a bunny named Chloe, who has a huge family that she loves spending time with. When her dad brings home a new TV, everyone wants to watch TV instead of using their imagination to play. Finally, her
Show More
siblings play with her but Mom and Dad still want to watch TV. The story abruptly ends with Chloe just going to sleep.

This seems more like a life lesson story for families. I like this book for TV turn-off week at school at any grade level but also for home to spark a discussion with my own children about balance.

This is a cute story about a family struggling with the t.v. being on too much. I think this is a great book because of the message about watching television. This seems to be a pretty hot topic, and is one that many parents struggle with on a daily basis. This book would be great to read in the
Show More
classroom and then have a discussion about the importance of hobbies outside of the t.v.

I read the book Chloe, by Peter McCarty. Peter McCarty is a well-known children’s author who has won several books awards including the Caldecott Honor, New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the year, and the Charlotte Zolotow Award. Chloe is a children’s picture story book. It is at the
Show More
reading level for children from preschool-1st grade. I came across this book at the Plymouth District Library in the children’s new books section.

The book follows a young bunny named Chloe and her big bunny family. She has ten older siblings and ten younger siblings. She is exactly in the middle. She loves spending time with her family and having family fun time. However one day, her daddy brings something new into the house which distracts the family from their usual family fun time, which is not okay with Chloe. She does she thinks she needs to do to get her family to have fun again.

The stories themes are family and imagination. Family is very important to Chloe and she makes sure to spend time with them. Her imagination comes through when she realizes that her family fun time might be ruined. She gets her family back to playing together by using her imagination. Both of these themes can be easily taught to young children. The story can also be relatable to students who may be a middle child or to students with large families. It shows that family is very important and should always come first. Also, always use your imagination in situations where you may be unsure of what to do next.

The text and illustrations go hand in hand. The text is fun and imaginative. The pictures show creativity and portray the story in a simple yet vibrant way, allowing the readers to link the pictures with the text. Overall, the themes as well as the illustrations make this story a great read for young readers. It is also very relatable and fun.

Chloe is an usual tale of a middle child. She is a bunny and has 10 older and 10 younger siblings, who she likes to be around. Chloe's favorite time is family time, but her dad one night brings a TV home and ruins this time for her. Everyone is watching television instead of truly being with each
Show More
other, so Chloe and her younger sister make their own fun. This soon attracts everyone's attention and family fun time resumes (kind of).

This is a great book that reminds us what quality family time is about: interacting with each other, not just sitting in a room together watching TV.
