Description

Provides examples of the many kinds of courage found in everyday life and in unusual circumstances, from tasting the vegetable before making a face to being a firefighter or police officer.

Description

What is courage? Certainly it takes courage for a firefighter to rescue someone trapped in a burning building, but there are many other kinds of courage too. Everyday kinds that normal, ordinary people exhibit all the time, like “being the first to make up after an argument,” or “going to bed without a nightlight.” Bernard Waber explores the many varied kinds of courage and celebrates the moments, big and small, that bring out the hero in each of us.

Courage would be classified as an informational piture book because it does not have a plot but has blurbs explaining the definition.
The Character identified in this book does a great job of catching the readers attention with the many examples of real life situations. Courage is a complicated

word when explaining it to children but in this book they describe every aspect of courage from eating your vegtables, to becoming a firefighter. This is an inspirational book for children

This book shows how the word courage is used in many different situations both big and small. Courage can come from others and can be found deep within ourselves when we need it the most.

the book shows different ways of having courage and shows with courage, children can do anything they want.

This book goes through many different circumstances that require courage. It includes everything from saying you’re sorry to going to outer space. Some of the definitions are funny, some are serious, and some teach kids important lessons like “trying to cover up your mean, jealous side”. In
Show More
the end, the author tells us that courage is something we give one another.

I think the messages in this book are wonderful. I also think kids need to be encouraged. They need to know that they can do something. Sometimes even the smallest thing (like sleeping without a nightlight) can seem huge and scary. Children need to know that it’s something that takes courage but it’s also something that can be done.

The author provides many everyday examples of when you would need courage. This book would be a good self-esteem builder, as well as show children that everybody deals with times when they may need courage.

As Bernard Waber tells us on the first few pages of this sweet and engaging little book... "There are many kinds of courage. Awesome kinds. And everyday kinds. Still, courage is courage-whatever kind..." You don't have to have a dangerous job, like a firefighter or policeman to be courageous, and
Show More
you don't have to climb Mt Everest, or fly into outer space, or explore the depths of the ocean. We all show how brave we are in special ways, every day. Courage is taking off the training wheels and finally learning to ride your bike, going to bed without a nightlight, and being the first to make up after an argument. Courage is getting a new haircut, never telling a secret entrusted to only you, and walking right up to the new kid and introducing yourself. You're courageous if you taste the new vegetable first before you make a disgusting face, or if you read the whole mystery without turning to the last page to see who did it. And sometimes it takes courage to start all over again, or hold on to your dream.....Mr Waber's simple, clever text is enhanced by his playful and humorous artwork, and youngsters are sure to see both the truth and a little of themselves on each page. Perfect for kids 4-8, Courage is a heartwarming and utterly charming book, sometimes poignant, often uplifting, but always stated in a positive way, that should get little ones thinking and open interesting discussions. "Courage is what we give to each other."

The overlaying message in this book is that there are many ways to be courageous, even in everyday situations. I had mixed feelings about this book after reading it. Even though I liked the main idea of the story, I felt the execution was not the best for the book. The layout of the illustrations
Show More
was very confusing to follow. There were two illustrations a page, and the way they were organized sometimes interrupted the flow of reading the page. Despite this, they were simple to understand and highlighted each message of courage.
I also thought the language was great for most of the book, but had some sentences that could be left out. When majority of the courageous situations were relatable to children, including ideas like “being sudsed and scrubbed by strangers” was not such a great idea. It was not something that I could relate to, and I did not desire to be in a situation like such.

this story helps children to not only define coursge, but how to build it up as well

I enjoyed this book! Every sentence in this book starts with "courage is..." This could be a good lesson to discuss about what courage means, or even to use this book as mentor text when wanting to write about a specific emotion. It provides examples of many kinds of courage found in everyday life

and unusual circumstances, from tasting the vegetable before making a face to having two candy bars and saving one for tomorrow.

A look at various types of courage, both small and every day like standing up for someone being picked on, or large like being a police officer.
