going to Mount Rushmore the consulted the doctore due to the high velocity of the area. While they were up there and sight seeing and stretching their legs the top of Abrahams chisled face so Flat Stanley acted as a bridge to help Arthur get to safety. WHen the Park Ranger showed up he asked Stanley if he could hold on a little longer until the repair crew showed up. Stanley of course held on. "Boy becomes big band-aide" was pne of the headlines. Flat Stanley was famous yet again, his brothers were envious. When the reporters left, one little girl remained, Calamity Jane, the tour guides daughter, SHe said that dynamite blasts from people looking for gold is what cause the break in Mount Rushmore. She told them that she had found a map and planned to find some gold herself and asked the Lambchop boys if they wanted to join along. The next morning after a hearty breakfast the boys and Calamity Jane set out on their adventure. so atop her trusty horse Aurthur sat behinde Jane on the saddle but Stanley was rolled up like a poster and stuck near the canteen. On the way to the mine they sang cowboy songs, and discussed the wildlife that was native to the area. As they entered the mine they all tunred on flashlights and before she could say SHHH they yelled "Wheres the gold?" and instantaniously there was a rumble. All of a sudden there was a cave in right in front of the mine entrance. All the workers hailed " every man for their selves." Calamity Jane was on the inside and the boys are on the outside. They tediously worked to get her out. Since Arthurs strength and Stanleys flatness wouldnt work they decided to emply something that they had recently talked about in school. THey decided to fix up a lever. With the noise of the cave in they realized the horse had run off and didnt want the boys help to find her. The horse was parched, and since they werent near a stream Stanley folded himself into a bowl and had them our in the water from the canteens. The horse had her drink. THey made a campfire and the tour group found them. As they crested Mount Rushmore they saw that Lincolns face was fixed. A gust of wind swooped Stanley up and Arthur had to get out his authentic Cowboy gear and rope him in with his lasso and ended up flying him like a kite. As their trip ended they realized their care was way to full to fit another thing and ended up mailing Flat Stanley home with the envelope marked FRAGILE.
My son had to do a Flat Stanley project inthe second grade so we are familiar with the travels of Flat Stanley. My son told us of how he had to make and decorate a Flat Stanley to mail to someone that we knew that would mail him elsewhere with more and more adventures.
In a classroom I would have my students make and decorate a Flat Stanley and figure out were they would send them and talk about the destinations they might go. We could also talk about the places that we might like to go in the future

Flat Stanley and his family headed off to Mt. Rushmore for a vacation. Good thing he was flat so he could fit in the car. He first saved the day when Mt. Rushmore cracked and he was able to be a bridge. I thought it was great that there was historical information included in the story like "In 1937

there was a bill introduced to add Susan B. Anthony as the 5th face. The adventure continued when they met a cowgirl named Calamity. She took them in the hills to watch the gold miners dig for gold. Flat stanley helped save the day again when there was a collapse in the hill. He also became a holder for water for the horse. I especially liked at the end of the story there were facts about the Gold Mines and Mt. Rushmore. I do want to see what other places Flat Stanley visits to tie his adventure into my lesson.
