as true as I think it needs to be,” as she candidly reveals her innermost thoughts, even her not so nice ones. The protagonist’s sarcastic sense of humor is woven throughout the short chapters, while also reflected in the exaggerated and comical drawings she includes in her diary. This realistic fictional hi-lo story is fitting for reluctant middle school readers, more so for girls, as the plotline is relatable and humorous while maintaining a low reading level. As the fourth of the Dear Dumb Diary series, this alone provides enough character development with a particular storyline that allows the book to also be read on its own. Despite the absurdity and comic nature of this story, Jim Benton manages to weave in a moral lesson about inner beauty and suggests four organizations for readers to get involved in if they “want to enhance your inner beauty for real.” Show Less
