The protagonist’s sarcastic sense of humor is woven throughout the short chapters, while also reflected in the exaggerated and comical drawings she includes in her diary. This realistic fictional hi-lo story is fitting for reluctant middle school readers, more so for girls, as the plotline is relatable and humorous while maintaining a low reading level. As the fourth of the Dear Dumb Diary series, this alone provides enough character development with a particular storyline that allows the book to also be read on its own. Despite the absurdity and comic nature of this story, Jim Benton manages to weave in a moral lesson about inner beauty and suggests four organizations for readers to get involved in if they “want to enhance your inner beauty for real.”
