A sequel is a scary thing, particularly when the original is a favourite. Too often, the second installment of a wonderful book feels like an afterthought – or an obligation. Authors struggle to pull off another great read without repeating themselves and things often don’t work out too well.

The Olivia books are a case in point. Though each of the subsequent books has a certain charm, none quite match the brilliance of the original. And does anyone prefer The Cat in the Hat Comes Back to the Cat in the Hat?

So, it was with trepidation that I picked up a copy of Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend. The cover (depicting Scaredy with his teeth bared in a tense grin, giving the thumbs up sign, and wearing a nametag) made me smile, but could the rest of the book hold up to Melanie Watt’s excellent first effort?

Unbelievably – yes! If anything (and I did not think this could be possible), the sequel is even better! Scaredy’s neurotic personality shines through on every page as he sets about the challenging task of finding a friend. Of course, nothing with germs, dirt, bad smells, or too many teeth will do. Undeterred, Scaredy comes up with a plan involving mittens, a lemon, nametag, comb, toothbrush, and chew toy - all designed to help make ‘the perfect first impression.’

Which he does, though not with his intended target (a goldfish – clean, quiet, and toothless). What follows is, both literally and figuratively, a wonderful romp! If you haven’t yet made Scaredy’s acquaintance, I’ll bet you’ll be fast friends after reading this utterly charming, laugh out loud picture book! Yes, I’m gushing – I can’t help it. I’m in love!

Great book for Counselors! Good themes that capture children's interest and give them ways to get the confidence to take a risk and reach outside the box. Excellent vocab and pictures!

This book is very funny. This book is about a squirrel who is nervous about making friends. This book could be used in the classroom on the first day of class to teach children that its okay to be nervous about making new friends.

Still charming, but not as original as the first.

I must admit that Scaredy Squirrel has become my favorite picture book character to date. He is cute and funny, and the stories he's in by Melanie Watt just make me smile. Prone to being scared and making lists, Scaredy Squirrel is on the hunt for the perfect friend. Does he find one? You need to

This book is a sequal to the original Scaredy Squirrel book and has the same layout. He has broken his fear of leaving the tree and now wants to find a friend. Everything is all good until his potential friend (a goldfish) is no longer an option. Lets just say Scaredy is no longer afraid of slober

and wet dog smell as well as teeth.Great illustration and good for read alouds.

Scaredy Squirrel is a loney squrriel who wants to have a friend but he is too nervouse to leave his tree. Scaredy Squirrel is very careful on how he plans to make a new friend. He plans to have a friend with no teeth because he has a fear of getting bit. As he looks across the field he finds a
Show More
goldfish and thinks it will be the perfect friend for him. Scaredy Squirrel makes a step by step plan of how to distract the other animals so he can climb down from his tree. He also makes a risk test, a sheet he plans to give animals he comes across. On the test sheet he has a picture of a himself and askes the question, "What do you see?" "A friend or something to bite?" As Scaredy Squirrle runs across the field and a dog starts to chase him. Part of his plan was to play dead if he came in contact with a dangerous animal, so that's what he did for 2 hours. Finally the dog gave him a nice big lick and Scaredy Squirrel realized he just made a new friend. This is an enjoyable book to read to children because Scaredy Squirrel is so nervous and careful. Also it can teach children to try something new.

I really liked this story. I liked how it was all about someone who needed to make a friend because all of us have felt that way before. I also liked how Scaredy was scared, but he got over his fear and made a friend. I also liked how he had a plan for the perfect friend, but someone who was not
Show More
perfect came along and that not perfect friend ended up being a great friend anyway. I would like to have this book in a future library.

Finding a friend is not easy for the paranoid but loveable little rodent.

Scaredy Squirrel returns for his second adventure in this hilarious and heart-warming little book, this time trying to cope with the frightening idea of finding a friend. Terrified of being bitten, Scaredy refuses to consider: walruses, bunnies, beavers, piranhas, or Godzilla, as possible
Show More
companions. No, he has selected a nice, safe candidate, and with a well-orchestrated campaign, believes that making a good first impression should be no trouble. Of course, as is so often the case, nothing goes quite as planned...

Getting right to the heart of the matter, Mélanie Watt's narrative begins: "Scaredy Squirrel doesn't have a friend. He'd rather be alone that risk encountering something dangerous," and it is that tension, between the desire for companionship and the need to be safe, that the author negotiates with such sensitivity and humor. This is territory that will be familiar to many young children, even if they aren't quite as phobic as Scaredy, and they will enjoy seeing the hero find a true friend, one who is "83% safe, but LOTS OF FUN!"

Scaredy Squirrel is a squirrel who is afraid of, well, a lot of things, including making friends. Potential friends could bite and Scaredy Squirrel isn’t about to let himself get bitten by such dangerous animals as walruses, bunnies, piranhas, and Godzilla. But then one day he spots a goldfish
Show More
and thinks he’s found the perfect, safe friend with no teeth. So he prepares to enact his plan to make the perfect first impression. However, nothing goes quite as he had planned. Children of all ages and adults as well will be charmed by Scaredy Squirrel’s attempts to make a friend. The book is clever, adorable, and humorous. The boldly colored illustrations enhance the unusual layout of the story action and a number of clever little details have been included for kids to find. This story, beyond simply being an enjoyable read, would be a good book for children who are nervous about making friends themselves. If children enjoyed Scaredy Squirrel’s funny story about making friends, there are several other stories featuring Scaredy Squirrel.

Scaredy goes out into the world to find a relatively tame friend. Instead he gets a little more than he was expecting. Looking forward to the next book in the Scaredy Squirrel series.

I loved this book! This book was about a particularly anxious squirrel, named Scaredy. Scaredy decides its time to make a friend, so he devises an elaborate friend to go meet a nice, safe, toothless goldfish, but on the way he encounters a dog. He, like many of us, discovers that friends can come
Show More
from all different places and are not always what we had expected them to be or look like.

Scaredy Squirrel is about a squirrel who haves no friends and he wants to make at least one. The friend he wants to make must contain no teeth because he doesn't want to get bitten. He spots a goldfish in the water fountain and he wants the goldfish to be his friend because of several reasons.

Along the way though he instead befriends a dog.

This story was hilarious and it even had me laughing. The pictures in the book is what really made the book stand out. They were done in charcoal pencil and acrylic which made this book feel even more kid-like. The pictures described what the author wrote really well.

I absolutely loved this loved this book! It was about a particularly anxious squirrel, named Scaredy. Scaredy decides its time to make a friend, so he devises an elaborate plan to go meet a nice, safe, toothless goldfish, but on the way he encounters a dog. He, like many of us, discovers that

friends can come from all different places and are not always what we had expected them to be or look like. There were specific features in the book that I also really liked; one of the pages in the story shows a diagram of the that Scaredy made, and there any many small, "easter egg" type of things hidden that one might not necessary read as a part of the story, but definitely add to the book's experience.

The central message of this book is that friendship comes in all kinds of varieties, and as long as your friendly and open to others, you never know what sort of interesting and wonderful people(or animals, in the case of this book) that you can make friends with. This book is probably best for children in grades K-4.

Beginner book about friendship. A squirrel is afraid to make friends because he thinks he will get bitten. He tries to make a friend with a goldfish, but finds a dog instead. He is scared of the dog at first, but then they become friends. Illustration was good, but the text and illustrations were

kind of distracting on some pages.

Scaredy Squirrel books are, in my opinion, a perfect read for any aged reader. These books include witty humor, intriguing graphics, and a good lesson. The language is very fun and engaging, the book even begins by instructing the reader to first wash their hands. The illustrations include graphics
Show More
such as charts and organizers, as well as illustrations of the scene. This helps the reader to really feel like part of the story. Finally, Scaredy Squirrel is an interesting and exciting character. He is well developed as we watch his outlook on life change. He initially planned for his new friend to be clean, toothless, and very calm and quiet. His ideal best friend would be a gold fish, but when his efforts don't go as planned, he ends up befriending a dog. Even though the dog fits none of his qualifications, he ends up actually being a very good friend to Scaredy Squirrel! The plot includes worry and suspense, joy and happiness. The big idea of this story is that no matter how much effort goes into planning, we are never guaranteed to have life go exactly as planned. Also, friends can come in unexpected packages.
