I like the notes explaining important translation details and expanding on the backgound of many verses in my edition. The appendixes with additional information about topics as the Abbreviated Letters as great too.

Interesting to read right now given the political climate. Although there are a few "kill the infidels" type passages, overall the tone is one of giving oneself up to the one and only God, although the consequences of not doing so will result in hellfire and brimstone, etc. Several passages in

practical day to day living as well -- multiple wives (only if they can be treated equally - yeah, right), how to divide property after death, when and how divorce is allowed, etc. Overall, though, it does not condone anything remotely like 9/11. Actually the Qur'an calls for a fiery and miserable afterlife for Osama and his kind.

Everyone should read this at least once. If you don't like it fine, but no one can deny that it is a beautiful piece of writing. Whether you agree with what it says or not.

Local notes

Believed by Muslims to have been verbally revealed by Allah to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel (Jibril) surah by surah between 609 and 632, the year of his death. Many Muslims consider the Qur'an uncreated and co-eternal with Allah, but others argue it was itself created. It is considered God's final revelation to humanity, and includes many narratives from the Bible (Old Testament), but reinterprets or presents alternate accounts for some of them. Creation was in six "yawm" (cf. biblical "yom"). Many Muslims consider these long ages (day-age creation), but others assume yawm = "day."
Surah Al-Aʻrāf includes the creation of Adam and Eve, and the angel Iblis who becomes the demonic tempter of humanity (related to Shaitan, "Satan").
