For fans of Indriðason, this book is an introduction to the character of Reykjavík police detective Marion Briem who figures marginally into all Arnaldur's crime novels based on the character of Erlendur Sveinsson. Briem has to sort through the actual crime scene evidence in addition to trying to make sense of all the rumours and intrigue of Cold War spying and deceptions. The retired detective Briem has been frequently mentioned in Indriðason's earlier writings but this book is set in an earlier time. Marion Briem is the key detective here, predating Erlendur's employment with the Reykjavík police force.
