The Peterson Guide is indispensible. I am an avid birder and this is the only book I take into the field. It is littered with notes, weather, dirt and love. It is faded beyond belief!

Contains detailed pictures/paintings, useful zone maps depicting where bird species reside, and helpful notes about unintentional strays, voice and call characteristics, etc. This book is one of the two best we have used for identifying birds during our hikes.
