Lone Wolf and Cub by Kazuo Koike is one of the most beautiful, most violent graphic novel I have ever seen - it is, for lack of a better word, stunning. The black and white art gives it a real sense of movement, action, and intensity. If you have ever wondered about the veracity of the old cliche

about a picture being worth a thousand words, Lone Wolf and Cub will take away any doubts.

The original series first came out in the 1970s and quickly became one of the best and most popular manga series out there. Now, Dark Horse has the rights and is releasing it in omnibus form. This first volume brings together the first three volumes and, at over 700 pages, it's quite a monster. When I first picked it up, I thought I could probably read it in its entirety in a day. Not that there isn't plenty of story line and dialogue but, like most graphic novels, the story is mainly found in the art. But I became so immersed in the graphics, it took me days to get through it and, when it was done, I immediately went back just to enjoy it again.

If you are a fan of manga and Lone Wolf here's a chance to get the first three volumes together. If you have never read Lone Wolf, you are missing one of the best graphic series ever. It gives some fascinating insights into Japanese culture, the stories are well-written and completely engrossing, and the art, well, it will take your breath away.

Graphic novel. Outcast samurai travels feudal Japan with his baby. It's about honor and how to live one's life. Series on which "Road to Perdition" is based.

Lone Wolf and Cub, written by Kazou Koike and illustrated by Goseki Kojima, is indeed probably one of the best manga ever written; and most like the best about feudal Japan. The main character, Ogami Itto, a ronin (wandering master-less samurai) assassin, and is son Ogami Daigoro make this story

the more compelling. Itto seem to be a crossover between Logan (aka Wolverine) and Samurai Jack while Daigoro is just a bad ass three-year-old who can fight like his father

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction or just into Japanese culture, landscape, and/or history. Also, this is one of the few manga with no anime tied to the title but there are live action movies.
