Description

Isabel "Izzy" Crane and her family have just relocated to Sleepy Hollow, the town made famous by--and obsessed with--Washington Irving's legend of the Headless Horseman. But city slicker-skeptic Izzy has no time for superstition as she navigates life at a new address, a new school, and, with any luck, with new friends. Ghost stories aren't real, after all... Then Izzy is pulled into the orbit of the town's teen royalty, Vicky Van Tassel (yes, that Van Tassel) and loveable varsity-level prankster Croc Byun. Vicky's weariness with her family connection to the legend turns to terror when the trio begins to be haunted by the Horseman himself, uncovering a curse set on destroying the Van Tassel line. Now, they have only until Halloween night to break it--meaning it's a totally inconvenient time for Izzy to develop a massive crush on the enigmatic Vicky. Can Izzy's practical nature help her face the unknown--or only trip her up? As the calendar runs down to the 31st, Izzy will have to use all of her wits and work with her new friends to save Vicky and uncover the mystery of the legendary Horseman of Sleepy Hollow--before it's too late. New York Times-bestselling writer Shannon Watters (Lumberjanes) and debut author Branden Boyer-White are joined by artist Berenice Nelle (Wanderlicht) in this coming-of-age tale, homage, and a spin-off of the classic Legend of Sleepy Hollow and everyone's favorite headless specter.… (more)

This is a modern graphic retelling of Sleepy Hollow. Our characters are Vicky Van Tassel, and Isabella Crane, and Bryn. Isabella is new to town and her parents want her to make friends, but she doesn’t get the whole hype around Sleepy Hollow and its history. Vicky, being a real Van Tassel knows
Show More
more about the history than she ever wanted to. She must live it day-to-day year-to-year, even though she just wants to be a normal girl. Bryn is a prankster, head of the water polo team, and a big sports jock. Isabella gets the shock of her life when she finds out that the headless horseman is real and he’s actually been trying to flag somebody down for 200 years. He needs to tell the Van Tassels he is there to keep them safe both now and in the future. This was a whimsical fun look at Sleepy Hollow. It’s geared towards YA but I think it would be okay for middle grade and younger. There is a page where Isabella and Vicky R fell asleep in the same bed but they’re in their pajamas. Overall, this was a fun atmospheric read and it could possibly have a sequel after all it says “the end for now”.

It's October and Izzy Crane has just moved with her parents to Sleepy Hollow where the residents of the village lean HARD into the Legend. Izzy is less than enthused by all the headless horseman love until she meets Vicky Van Tassel who is involved in every one of Sleepy Hollow's events. However,

Izzy and Vicky's blossoming relationship is complicated by a curse on the Van Tassel family that threatens Vicky's life.

This graphic novel is a fun riff on the elements of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, while also encompassing an adorable queer romance and plenty of humour. The art is gorgeous and, as I'd expect from one of the co-creators of Lumberjanes, the story is sweet and funny with just a dash of spooky. Hollow would be a fantastic Halloween read. Recommended.

Another book about which I could find naught to complain. A play on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, many generations after the fact, with the parts "recast" as a teenage descendant, her sweet lunky friend, and the new girl in town who happens to bear the Crane surname. (I did wonder whether that would

be significant, though it wasn't.) The budding romance between the two girls was fun and felt organic, and though the whole thing was wrapped up neatly in what felt like no time at all, it was the perfect bite-sized tale with no further elaboration needed. The art, as well, as attractive, and I appreciated the diversity of race and ability among the characters.
