Description

"For Better or For Worse: The Comic Art of Lynn Johnston will be published to coincide with an international touring exhibition of Lynn Johnston's work, organized by the Art Gallery of Sudbury. The book features some of Johnston's most popular narratives, interspersed with an essay that chronicles the development of her drawing, her life, influences both personal and artistic, and the history of her wildly successful comic strip. This book also gathers together a generous selection of Lynn Johnston's daily comic strips and Sunday pages, spanning the lives of the Patterson family."--

This is a sort-of biography of Lynn Johnston, creator of one of my favorite comic strips, "For Better Or For Worse". Or more accurately, it's a study of how her life experiences carried over into her art. The book is candid and does not pull punches. In particular, her parents and both former

husbands do not fare well here. I was particularly distressed to read of the philandering and seedy behavior by her second husband, Rod Johnston, the inspiration and role model for John Patterson, the patriarch of the strip. But on the whole, this is a charming look at the people and life experiences that often became part of the strip. There are many strips and artwork samples herein, but it's not really a compendium of strips in any kind of order; just a selection of materials that illustrate the various chapters of her life. This is perhaps only of interest to the diehard "For Better Or For Worse" fan. Fortunately, I am one.
