Description

Visually and emotionally rich, MetaMaus is as groundbreaking as the masterpiece whose creation it reveals. In the pages of MetaMaus, Art Spiegelman re-enters the Pulitzer prize-winning Maus, the modern classic that has altered how we see literature, comics, and the Holocaust ever since it was first published twenty-five years ago. He probes the questions that Maus most often evokes -- Why the Holocaust? Why mice? Why comics? -- and gives us a new and essential work about the creative process. MetaMaus includes a bonus DVD-R that provides a digitized reference copy of The Complete Maus linked to a deep archive of audio interviews with his survivor father, historical documents, and a wealth of Spiegelman's private notebooks and sketches. Compelling and intimate, MetaMaus is poised to become a classic in its own right. - Publisher.… (more)

An absolutely fascinating look "behind the scenes" of the groundbreaking 'Maus' graphic novels, probing the tensions between personal and collective memory (not to mention pop culture and "high" literature), and examining the construction and reconstruction of memories, the conscious crafting of

narratives, and graphic storytelling techniques. It deploys a really well-chosen selection of source materials (photos, rough drafts, photographs, oral history transcripts, etc) to do this, and more are included on the accompanying DVD-ROM (what a pleasure it was to actually hear Vladek speaking). Highly recommended (but probably impenetrable if you haven't read the 'Maus' graphic novels).

i don't want to call this a review. more like commentary on reading this book...
initially i thought it was going to be heavy handed and overtly academic but it is actually quite engaging. the book contains essentially a long interview with art spigelman full of nicely printed and presented support

material. it's a pleasure to read and makes you wanna revisit the work that it's commenting on. there are lots of very compelling anecdotes and pieces of information about the making of maus and the subject of maus itself. i think it's quite worth reading.

An extraordinarily insightful, intimate look inside the creative process and the evolution of a masterpiece.

I found this very entertaining, and it is a great physical production. I don't recommend it if you haven't read Maus. The first book in Mark's 2011 list to pick up the coveted asterisk in a long time.
