Linguistic philosophy: the underlying reality of language and its philosophical import

Challenges theoretical linguistics. Katz simply argues that languages are systems of abstractions of objects. To the extent these objects exist independent of "the mind", this system runs counter to the "mentalist" or conceptualist approach of which Chomsky is the leading exponent.
