Description

The compelling memoir from the UK's most eminent forensic scientist and some of the most fascinating criminal investigations she has worked on. 'The dead keep many secrets. Sometimes they are the only witness to a crime. But ask the right questions, and they will eventually reveal everything.' Never before has criminal justice rested so heavily on scientific evidence. After a brief spell studying sea slugs on the Isle of Wight, she joined the Forensic Science Service. Her first case was the Yorkshire Ripper. She is now the most sought after forensic scientist in the UK and has been involved in numerous high profile cases, including the Cardiff Three, the coastal path murders and the trail of Stephen Lawrence. From the crime scene to the courtroom, When the dogs don't bark is the remarkable story of a life spent searching for the truth.… (more)

Slightly disappointing book. While is certainly interesting, the core content I was expecting, namely description of cases and how they were solved, is padded with a lot of stuff about the author's career and how she worked to establish private forensics services so it becomes almost a business

book rather than a forensic book. While this is certainly not without interest, it is my opinion secondary to the forensic material. The author also has an annoying habit of not detailing the judicial conclusion to many of the cases she mentions, sometimes rather airily saying she has just forgotten it, which didn't go down well at all. In summary, a fascinating book as regards the forensic science, less interesting regarding the business aspects of forensics. Worth reading though.
