Description

This explosive new book challenges many of the long-prevailing assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on not only the trendy intellectuals of our times but also such historic interpreters of American life as Alexis de Tocqueville and Frederick Law Olmsted. In a series of long essays, this book presents an in-depth look at key beliefs behind many mistaken and dangerous actions, policies, and trends. It presents eye-opening insights into the historical development of the ghetto culture that is today wrongly seen as a unique black identity--a culture cheered on toward self-destruction by white liberals who consider themselves "friends" of blacks. An essay titled "The Real History of Slavery" presents a jolting re-examination of that tragic institution and the narrow and distorted way it is too often seen today. The reasons for the venomous hatred of Jews, and of other groups like them in countries around the world, are explored in an essay that asks, "Are Jews Generic?" Misconceptions of German history in general, and of the Nazi era in particular, are also re-examined. So too are the inspiring achievements and painful tragedies of black education in the United States. "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" is the capstone of decades of outstanding research and writing on racial and cultural issues by Thomas Sowell.… (more)

This is a book of six essays exploring the history surrounding racism and prejudice which illustrates that no culture is innocent and no culture wholly guilty. Using the facts of history rather than using history to present a vision, he provides strong evidence that Blacks have fared worse since

1960's than before, that all minority middlemen have been resented, not just Jews, and most surprisingly, that most of what is championed as Black culture is a mimic of Southern white redneck culture. It was a book that not only made me think but made me change some of my viewpoints. Excellent

A well researched and documented book which quickly but thoroughly nonetheless encapsulation of world events. The purpose of this book is to look beyond rabid anti-Eurocentric viewpoints. Dr. Sowell's premise of this book is not to absolve America and the "West" of any past sins, but to illustrate

that any sins Westerners have committed are not solely a character flaw of white men. Furthermore, Westerners were the ones to actually work to correct their enslaving of other humans.

He goes beyond slavery and dissects differences between Southern and Northern Americans to identify geographically cultural differences in order to explain that there really is no fundamental difference between "rednecks" be they white or black.

There is much more to this book than I can properly elaborate or explain here. But don't think for a moment it is a absolution of "white man's sins" against the world. Thomas Sowell peppers all his ideas with the caveat that sins are sins, but we must put into context what occurred in the thirteenth century with dominant views of the century; it does no good and serves no purpose to malign past generations of doing something that was a pervasive idea worldwide. What we can do is strive to no repeat or emulate those flawed notions.

This book contains 6 essays on cultural history. 3 of the essays relate to the racial issues between black folks & progressive white folks with the background to the rewriting of the history of slavery around the world. In one essay, the great achievement of black folks coming out of American

slavery, according to the author is now hidden by progressive white folks who have interest in maintaining false history to perpetuate their hold on power. He relates the long history of anti-semitism & the role of German culture's long history of anti-semitism toward the Jewish people. Finally, the last essay is "History versus Visions" which is focused on the serious consequences of holding to perceptions rather than the truth. When "vision" replaces "history" the truth is lost in the shadows & lies & half-truths become the "new history" This last essay should be a must read for all students of history.

I grabbed this book on the recommendation of a friend, and it started out interestingly. The author presents some interesting theories regarding race and culture. While his theories seem convincing (he offers a lot of evidence), the overall presentation is rather plodding. I lost interest, got

Not nuanced enough for subject matter it tackles even if the arguments are wholly reasonable.
