Since the end of the Second World War many thousands of books have been published about the exploits of spies on nothing more substantive than a fertile imagination and access to some very dubious historical records. Several of these more implausible tales have, however, gained wide circulation, and a few have even been endorsed by respectable historians and supposedly expert commentators.
