A post-traumatic volume after killing a main character in the last arc, this one mainly sets up Negan (The Governor 2.0) and his world. His relentless cussing is tiresome, but his evil system is compelling. The story hooks are solid and frequently devastating, despite the more subtle tone.

After the uppercut in the previous volume, I wondered if I even wanted to read on. Because surely there would be more heartache down the road, caused by one of the many sadistic characters that inhabit this world. This volume alleviates some of the objections I've started to have with this series,
Show More
but still it feels like we're stuck in some elaborate merry-go-round.

But I'm intrigued enough to continue with the series, hoping that at some point its storylines will leave more breathing room for character development.

Rick starts to put his new plan into action, Negan throws his weight around, Carl gets himself into quite a large spot of bother, and Ezekiel from The Kingdom is introduced, along with his tiger. I thought the first half, the part where Carl has his adventure, was absolutely fantastic. The part at

the end that starts the Kingdom story is also interesting, but there is a part in the middle that is very much rinse-and-repeat, unfortunately. It's still a good installment in the series and I am looking forward to the next installment to see where Kirkman will take our little group of zombie-fighters.

One of the members of the group gets an up-close and personal look at how Negan's society runs. Meanwhile Rick decides to try a different tactic and returns to the Hilltop to ask for help.

Not a lot of death, though we learn a TON. More set-up for further tragedy, I'm sure.

Rick is forced to strike a bargain with Negan, the ruthless leader of the Factory, who now will take half of the supplies from Rick's group for the foreseeable future. The situation becomes even more desperate when Rick's son Carl hides in a Factory truck and kills several of Negan's pillagers. Of

course, Carl is captured and experiences how ruthless Negan can be. Rick leads a group of his citizens on a rescue mission to bring Carl back, and they are shocked by Negan's response. Rick is also visited by Jesus from the Hilltop compound, who takes him to meet Ezekiel from the Kingdom survivors group and the three consider a joint assault on the Factory. This is another excellent volume in this long running series about humanity struggling to survive hordes of hungry Zombies and human criminals.

This latest installment was AMAZING!

The reader gets some background on psychopathic Negan and I savoured every page. Negan is insane. Even more so than the governor which is pretty impressive. But he is hilariously funny, and did I mention insane. I was laughing so much at his dialogue, it was a

breath of fresh air to make a villain really scary yet humourous, it seems like the combination wouldn't work but it does.

Another colony is introduced, the ominous Kingdom... Not too sold on the king with a pet tiger. It's too much of a stretch for me to believe a tiger could be domesticated.

But other than that best volume yet. Can't wait to see how this all pans out.

The title means "what comes after Negan beat Glenn to death". Rick and his group of Alexandrians have agreed to Negan's terms of giving up half of all the food and medicine they have. Everyone except twelve year old Carl, who takes revenge on Negan's group, not knowing that his dad Rick is only

I'm not sure why I keep reading this series. There's the curiosity of what will happen next, of course, but I feel like I'm rereading what's already happened. Negan and the Saviors have some nuances, but in the end it's the story of The Governor and Woodbury all over again. In the post-apocalyptic
Show More
world ultra-violent bullies will take control and there will be more to fear from the living than the dead, and blah, blah, blah. Perhaps it's the influence of reading Rebecaa Solnit's A Paradise Built in Hell, but I'd like to see more of how communities come together after a disaster. The Walking Dead - both the comics and the tv show - is at it's best when it's showing how people adapt to life in the post-apocalyptic world, the little things they do to adapt. But all too often I find that the writers force the drama by constantly having all the survivors want to kill one another. At least Ezekiel and his tiger are making things interesting.

refresh for reading the next, ready to finally see what comes next.

The only reason this gets three stars is simply because it's one of the interim editions. That is, while there is a fairly self-contained story in here involving Carl, overall, this is more of a set up to the next volume.

That being said, this is still an excellent series. As long as Kirkman keeps
Show More
pumping these out, I'll keep buying.
