A rhyming story, it builds on each line, in the manner of the "house that jack built" and shows just how scarey it can be when the monsters who live in the house are startled by a knock on the door. When they open the door to a child in a monster mask they are ok, until he removes the mask and

reveals the child. Then they run screaming from the house!

One of my favorite illustrators which makes this book come to life. The story is written in a rhythm like "The Napping House" or "There was an Old Lady That Swallowed a Fly" story. Each part starts out with a few sentences, than each subsequent page builds on the previous phrase. This books is

great for teaching vocabulary related to Halloween. Now Halloween may not be the most politically correct holiday, it is one that many school children can relate to. Children are familiar with the theme, so pre-teaching isn't as necessary. For thsoe that are not familiar with Halloween, then obviously pre-teaching would be needed. This book is good for teaching words such as: haunted, frightened, shriek, or other words that are not often used in day to day language. Students would need to be taught these vocabulary words specifically for better understanding, at least in ELL or SPED environments. With a cute story and great graphics this is one of my favorite stories.
