Fiction. Romance. Suspense. HTML:Bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann blends high adventure, harrowing drama, and heart-racing passion into thrilling novels of suspense. Whether tackling danger or wrestling with desire, her elite heroes and heroines never fail to give their all, in stories that soar above and beyond expectations. Now, in this electrifying novel, Brockmann takes us Into the Storm. In a remote, frozen corner of New Hampshire, a Navy SEAL team and the elite security experts of Troubleshooters, Incorporated are going head-to-head as fierce but friendly rivals in a raid-and-rescue training exercise. Despite the frigid winter temperatures, tension smolders between veteran SEAL Petty Officer Mark Jenk Jenkins and former cop turned Troubleshooter Lindsey Fontaine after an impulsive night goes awry. And then, suddenly, Tracy Shapiro, the Troubleshooters new receptionist, vanishes while playing the role of hostage during a mock rescue operation. Teaming up with the FBI to launch a manhunt in the treacherous wilderness, Jenk and Lindsey must put aside their feelings as a record snowstorm approaches, dramatically reducing any hope of finding Tracy alive. The trail is colder than the biting New England climate until a lucky break leads to a horrifying discovery a brutally murdered young woman wearing the jacket Tracy wore when she disappeared. Suddenly there is a chilling certainty that Tracy has fallen prey to a serial killer one who knows the backwoods terrain and who doesnt play by the rules of engagement. In a race against time, a raging blizzard, and a cunning opponent, Jenk and Lindsey are put to the ultimate test. Rising everything, they must finally come together in a desperate attempt to save Tracyand each other.… (more)

A solid B+. While I didn't find the hero very compelling (nor the conflict between him and the heroine), a secondary character - Irving "Izzy" Zanella - made the book worth the hardback price. He was funny and irreverant and completely sophomoric, but with that heart-of-gold nobility that make
Show More
Brockmann heroes to-die-for.

The story is fairly manufactured: SEAL Team 16 is pitted against private security firm Troubleshooters, Inc. in some training operations. Mark "Jenk" Jenkins and Lindsey Fontaine, a former LAPD detective, act as liasons for their respective employers (he for the SEALS and she for TI), find themselves attracted to each other, and end up in bed. But Mark has a hang up on a high school crush, and Lindsey is commitment-phobic to the max. It isn't until the two are forced to ditch the training exercises for the real-world drama of locating a missing woman believed to be in the clutches of serial killer that things get serious.

My main problem with the book - the thing that kept it from a 5-star rating - was the conflict between Jenk and Lindsey. There just wasn't one that I could buy into. At first Jenk is simply too wrapped up in his fantasy of winning the heart and hand of Tracy Shapiro, the ditzy gal from his past who holds no positive attributes at all that I can see, thus making his obession kind of bizarre. When he wakes up and smells the Lindsey, she gets all squeamish about the idea of committing to anything more than a few-days-long affair. Both characters seemed to have these problems strictly so that they could not get together for the entire length of the book.

But, as I said before, Izzy kept me turning the pages. As did Sophia, although her tortured relationship with Decker is starting to wear thin. Again, the conflict between them is simply not great enough to keep it stretched out over so many books.

Brockmann never fails to deliver a great read, and she doesn't let you down here. Not her best - for that I'd recommend Over the Edge or Out of Control - but still enjoyable.

Story Arc Alert: Sophia and Decker’s story arc moves forward. Izzy, Dave, and Tracy all have story arcs that

begin.

Into the Storm was very good for two reasons. One being the consistency of Brockmann and her characters. Two, there is a substory of a crazy serial killer with this captive called Number 5 who has killed Numbers 6-20 to keep herself alive. Izzy is my favorite character in this book because he's such a guy's guy and keeps me laughing.

So I loved Suzanne Brockmann but then she started to lose me a little bit. The book with Max - not so hot. But this one, while not being as good as the excellent romance of Wildcard Karmody (and why don't we ever see him again, he really was one of my favorite of her characters, much better than
Show More
Sam who has totally lost his personal edge to me.) is better than the last few were. Most of the gang is here, and we get introduced to Lindsay Fontaine, Asian American (I like that not everyone is cookie cutter white) and Mark Jenkins. They have a lovely rapport, and his infatuation with Tracey Shapiro is handled well. Less well is Izzy's interaction with Tracey, but we can see that that is a relationship that is going to grow. Overall I'd give it a B+. The serial killer stuff was so grusome, that I didn't even skim, I just went to the next paragraph. I don't like torture porn, not in films and not in books. But I could avoid it, and so stayed with the novel. If I had had to read it, I couldn't have finished the book.

VERY GOOD BOOK! I really liked the Lindsey and Jenk characters and Izzy and Tracy even grew on me by the end of the book. I love the dialogue in Suzanne Brockmann's books. It seems so real and some of these guys are hilarious. I liked the way she separated the parts about the serial killer, so that

if you didn't want to read about it, it was easy to skip. Great addition to the series.

Jenk and Lindsey's romance was a bit boring to me, though I'm looking forward to Tracy and Izzy hooking up...

If a woman is going to have a best male friend, Dave Malkoff, would be a good choice. Dave Malkoff is such a gentlemen and protector. He puts other people before himself. Sophia has received something priceless, when Dave came into her life. Dave would stand up for Sophia, when she couldn't stand
Show More
up for herself. It wasn't because he didn't believe that she didn't have a back bone. Dave has a huge heart. A heart that has gotten broken more than once in this book. What wouldn't this man do for Sophia? I hated that he was trying his best to get her a man that didn't love her. Poor Sophia was blind in this book. Lindsey and Jenkins - the main couple in this book, made a cute interracial couple. Sam and Alyssa had a small part. A new woman name Tracy was talked about and the women didn't too much like her. You would have to read the book to find out.

Book 10 in Troubleshooters series

Mark Jenkins & Lindsey Fontaine

SEAL Team 16 (with CO Lew Koehl) and Tom Paoletti's crew from Troubleshooters, Inc. get together for a couple joint training exercises, the second being a winter exercise deep in the woods of Northern New Hampshire--right
Show More
before a blizzard hits. Lindsey Fontaine was the hostage in their first exercise, and she ended up sneaking past both teams without either knowing she had eluded everyone. Wanting a more realistic victim, this second scenario uses TS Inc.'s new scatterbrained receptionist, Tracy Shapiro, playing the role of hostage, complete in white nurse's garb (easier to spot/harder to hide her in the woods). She is also untrained and unskilled so it would be like if they were rescuing, say, ME, for instance. At the height of the exercise, the Team gets the call to go out on a "real-world" op, and their wargames session is called to a halt. In the chaos of calling in all the Team members, packing up, etc., they don't notice until some time has passed that Tracy has disappeared.

In a side story, we witness the horror of a young girl, Beth, who is being held by a serial killer. It is a real freak show, complete with eyeballs stored in Tupperware in the freezer. This poor girl is referred to as "Number Five". She has survived for months because she has learned to do what "I am God" says. Although she is starving and filthy, battered and bruised, somehow she has avoided the torture that the other girls have suffered because she has been able to best them in a fight--and kill them before they kill her. She is actually bestowing mercy killings because the serial killer does not end their lives himself, he just tortures them without end (removing eyelids, etc.).

The serial killer must have grown sort of an attachment to Number Five, because when she becomes very ill from an infected cut on her arm, he steals prescription drugs from a pharmacy (killing the employee), and also kidnapping another victim, "Number Twenty-One", Tracy, who is still dressed in her nurse's outfit and has just arrived at that store, calling in to let TS Inc. know she made it out of the woods. She leaves a basic description of the guy and his car when she calls in, just because he seems a little weird, not knowing that she truly is in danger. The fact that he thinks she really is a nurse and can help Number Five buys Tracy a little time.

The action in this book is really the winner here, even though the tame romance between Jenk and Lindsey is a good story too. He's a SEAL team member, she's a former LAPD cop now working for TS Inc. They are a good match but try to stick to friendship since Jenk has a longtime crush on Tracy Shapiro and is sure now is his chance to convince her to marry him. He's stuck on that idea even as he realizes he is much more attracted to Lindsey. It just takes him a while to let that old dream go.

There's also a surprising twist in a start-up romance between Tracy Shapiro and Irving "Izzy" Zanella. Izzy is rarely serious and is amused by how clueless Tracy is, although he's the first to admit he is stunned by his attraction to her on a physical level. It all seems to be a joke with him until he discovers that Tracy is missing. Then he goes ape and risks an Unauthorized Absence in order to stay with the team searching for her.

Exciting plot and nice resolution. The "girls" get a big role in saving the day this time around.

Oh, there's also a short story at the end about Sam & Alyssa Locke-Starrett. Sam's on assignment in Italy providing security for a high-end wedding, in which he spends most of his time avoiding the bridesmaids who are constantly hitting on him. It was supposed to only take a week but it keeps getting delayed and has stretched out to three weeks. He calls Alyssa complaining that this assignment is like a "Girls Gone Wild" video and he's going nuts missing Alyssa who is back home tracking down a child molester. Alyssa's best friend, FBI Agent Jules Cassidy, arrives unexpectedly to take over for a few days and give Sam a break so he can make a quick trip home to see his wife. Their short visit provides an opportunity for Jules & Sam to have a heart-to-heart as friends, talking about the latest dating failure in Jules' life, another man hiding in the closet to protect his career. This is another installment in seeing the evolution of the formerly slightly homophobic Sam come to appreciate and respect his friendship with Jules and also become a supportive and cherished friend of Jules' as well.

When Troubleshooters and Team Sixteen get together for a training operation in New Hampshire they cannot know that things will go terribly wrong. What is supposed to be just a nice and learning time, becomes a big horror show when Mark Jenkins and Lindsey Fountaine, that had a one night stand, keep
Show More
pushing the other wrong, especially when Jenks is supposed to be in love with Tracy Shapiro, the new receptionist of Trobleshooters. But Tracy takes off with Izzy Zanella and get drunk and when the sobriety arrives, she swears that she won't speak with him again.
Tracy is the hostage on the war game they are playing and she's supposed to run away from the bad guys but when she runs, she gets completely lost and falls in the lap of something much more terrible that being lost in the woods.
When the two teams get together to rescue Tracy they need to speed up not only because of a raging snow storm but because Tracy is in the hand of a serial killer.

I found this one to be the creepiest of all the books that Suzanne as written: I loved it.
Suzanne can weave so many stories in THE story that is impossible for you not to get to know the characters, their personality, their fears and hopes; it's almost like a family, like something real and palpable that you can reach and not want to let go.

I love all the Seal 16 books. I was so sorry to see that she has quit writing them as of this year. The new series just isn't the same. Guess maybe I need to get used to it.

SEAL Mark Jenkins, nicknamed Jenk, was really never on my radar in the previous Troubleshooters novels. He seemed like a nice guy but nothing about him really stood out. In the prologue he almost gets killed and decides he wants to get married and move on with that life before it’s too late. He
Show More
picks out a girl he's always liked, Tracy, arranges for her to be hired as a receptionist at the Troubleshooters office, and starts working toward the goal. He's hoping to see more of her now that SEAL Team 16 and the Troubleshooters gang are working together in a joint exercise in the freezing cold of northern New Hampshire.

But it's Troubleshooters operative and former LAPD detective Lindsey Fontaine who understands all his jokes. Jenk and Lindsey becomes friends, and maybe more, as the two teams train together.

The real star of this book, in my opinion, was Izzy Zannella, Jenks' best friend. Another SEAL who wasn't on my radar either, but now I can't wait to get to his story. We also get some Sophia, Deck, and Dave. I know Sophia and Deck are destined to get together in some future book, but he's still a jerk.

The suspense comes in the form of a serial killer, whereabouts unknown. We get the occasional chapter which seems to be narrated by a woman being tortured and imprisoned by a serial killer. Those sections leave the reader anxious and wondering who the killer will choose from the list of women working the joint training.

I felt like the various threads and numerous characters never came together cohesively until the final third of the book. But, Troubleshooters is one of my favorite series, so I still enjoyed it for the most part.

Into the Storm
4 Stars

A joint raid-and-rescue training mission between SEAL Team 16 and Troubleshooters, Inc. takes a dangerous turn when one of the team members vanishes without a trace. Petty Officer Mark Jenkins and former police officer Lindsay Fontaine must put aside their personal history
Show More
stemming from a one-night-stand in order to work together before the missing woman becomes the latest victim of a sadistic serial killer.

While this is more enjoyable than the previous book, especially in terms of Mark and Lindsay's romance, there are still some issues.

To begin with, for a group of well-trained Navy SEALs and covert operatives, there is a great deal of immaturity, drama, and angst with the characters. They all gossip like teenagers in high school, and Sophia and Decker's behavior is particularly childish.

Moreover, there has been a sense over the series that Brockmann is recycling character types. This is particularly evident here with Mark's preoccupation with Tracey, which is comparable to Ken Carmody and his ex. While Mark's actions in this regard are questionable, Lindsay's reactions are appropriate, and it is all resolved in a realistic, believable and satisfying way.

On a side note Tracey, unlike some of the "other women" characters in the series, actually proves to be quite likable. Her experiences over the course of the book reveal hidden depths and it will be interesting to see where Brockmann goes with her.

In terms of the suspense, the serial killer plot is new to the series, which has until now focused mainly on terrorists and assassins. This change is compelling as the villain is very disturbing and the POV of one of his victims ratchets up the tension. The climax and resolution are well-written and exciting.

All in all, this is an entertaining read overall, and I look forward to the next installment in which we return to the FBI...

I'm still looking for another romantic suspense novelist who can write with this level of wit and fun. All her characters are winners. Lindsey, Jenkins, Izzy, Tracy, Decker and Sophia, Dave, Gilman - and more - the motel owners in New Hampshire – it's all terrific. Unfortunately, the undercurrent
Show More
story of the tortured woman is ugly and the juxtaposition of the two is jarring - otherwise this would get 5 stars. I loved the cold weather setting in New Hampshire.
