Planting a rainbow teaches the reader about the steps of growing flowers throughout the seasons. Many different flowers are well represented by their name and color. As you turn the page, all the flowers start growing and it starts representing each color of the rainbow.

This book is a great way to teach both the colors of the rainbow and plants. It could be used to introduce or review either concept and could lead to fun projects such as allowing the class to plant their own rainbow.

This book has a nice concept and completements our garden activities well. However, the most of the flowers don't look very realistic.

a non-linear story that touches on the various flowers found in gardens. Very colorful.

This book is great for children kindergarten to second grade. It teaches children about spring and flowers. Also it shows them that gardens can be found anywhere, even in the city.

This book is about planting a rainbow of flowers. Every year Mom and I plant flowers, and they order certain types. Then the flowers begin to sprout, and open up in the warm spring soil. They then watch the rainbow grow, and grow. They have red flowers, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. They

then pick them and bring them home. When summer is over, we grow the rainbow over again next year. This is a cute picture book for children to learn their colors.

This story is about a little child and their mom planting a rainbow each year. They buy all the materials they need, and then wait all winter. In the spring the rainbow grows, and they have a garden of the rainbow. They pick the flowers in the summer, and start all over for next year. I liked this

book because it shows how to plant things, and that it can be fun.

A mother and child plant a garden every year. They plant all kinds of flowers of different colors. The garden looks like a rainbow. In the summer they pick the flowers and when winter kills all the flowers they know they have next year to look forward to. They get to make there garden again and

make a new rainbow. I like the pictures and how they showed the name of all the flowers. I would read this to a kindergarten or 1st grade class. It would make a great book for a picture walk.

This book is about a mother and child planting a garden. Every summer, they buy the seeds and plant them and wait for the garden to grow. The garden grows fruits and vegetables that are all the different colors of the rainbow. It's a good book to use if a teacher is going over the different colors.

It has many creative pictures that I enjoyed looking at.

My son chose this book to read from the stack we brought home from the library because "Mommy likes flowers." We love Ehlert's gardening books - flowers, vegetables, and butterflies! The simple joy of watching the seasons pass as you plant or prepare to plant make a nicely flowing story. My son

In Planting a Rainbow, Lois Ehlert describes how to plant a colorful garden. She starts with fall bulbs, winter seeds and spring planting. Then the plants grow and Ehlert explains color by color the plants that are best. The text is large and there are not many words, making it a great book for
Show More
pointing out words. Although the text is necessary to hold the book together, the highlights of this book are the illustrations. Elhert’s collage illustrations are beautiful. They are so bright, colorful, and cheerful. The flowers seem to pop right off the page. There is little variation in the shades of color, creating a bold and exciting look. Planting a Rainbow is a wonderful book for parents to read with their preschoolers. This book is highly recommended for the children’s section of public libraries.

A perfect book to use during the springtime to talk about flowers and gardening. It could be used as an introduction to planting a class garden.

Summary- In this book a young child gets excited every fall to work in the garden with the mom. They grow many palnts in their garden and the child enjoys doing this.

Personal Reaction- I enjoy the interactive book and this is one of those books. The reader has to flip the flap to see what beautiful
Show More
flower was planted and what color it was. The vibrant colors in this book really drew me in and the wording was perfect for younger readers interested in an outdoor activity.

Classroom Ext. Ideas-
1. After reading this book I would ask my children to pick their favorite flower in the book. When everyone had a flower picked out then they would get colored tissue paper of the flowers color and beginning make the flower they picked out.

2.Another way to get my children interested in nature is taking them outside to see if they can find some of the flowers in the book.

Entire rainbows can be grown in gardens. This book is best used to teach young children about the colors of the rainbow, but older children might benefit from some of the more uncommon flower names found in it.

Genre: Realistic fiction
Review: The characters in the story are not based off of real people. The mom and child actually planting a garden is very plausible to happen though.
Char: Neither of the characters are round or dynamic. You do not know anything about their background or thoughts. You only

find out about their actions over planting a garden.

Age: Primary
Genre: Realistic fiction
Review: Though this story does not pertain to a particular event or person, it could very well happen to anyone. It would be relatable to daughters with their moms, as it is about a daughter and mother planting a garden together and watching it grow.

This is a really great book and is very colorful. A fun book that helps students understand how to plant flowers, And the book goes into how each of the flowers help create a rainbow. I would use this with my Kindergarten class to teach colors or for 1st grade when we learn about plants.
