Can I just say, this book R-O-C-K-S?!?! Jarrett Krosockzka has created a book for all the Riot Grrls out there who are now dressing their toddlers in leather and Baby Doc Martens. Jarrett K has taken the familiar standard "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" and turned it upside down and inside out with the

addition of a band of punkified barnyard animals duded up in leather, sunglasses and headbands. The band takes the stage after the farmer goes to sleep, and they spend the night rockin' the barn full of fourlegged critters. The text is spare but perfect, but it is the illustrations that make this book memorable. I especially liked the horses acting as bouncers/security. I'd certainly never mess with 'em! Cindy is going to do this one at storytime in a couple weeks and have Dave come in with all his instruments. And can I just say, was I surprised that Parma owned this book? Nope. Cathy, you ROCK, too!

Punk Farm answers the age-old question of what farm animals do when the farmer's away. No, Snowball and Napoleon don't stage a revolution in this story - the pig in Punk Farm has better things to do: amping up his electric guitar and wailing out a punk rock rendition of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm"

along with sheep on vocals, chicken on keyboard, goat on bass, and cow on drums.

My daughter thought it was good fun. This isn't the sort of book you can read in a meek voice, and my throat was a little sore after each reading (I'm so not punk). The writing isn't particularly inspired - it's the reader's "performance" and illustrations that carry this one. (Ages 1½-4)

Anything by Krosoczka is preschool gold! You've never heard "Old MacDonald" quite like this! The illustrations are great. The animals each have their own unique personality. The sequel's equally hilarious... "Punk Farm on Tour"!

This is a book about a punk band of farm animals, that must practice and play shows in secret from their farmer, Joe. They play classics but with a punk twist, like "old macdonald had a farm," but really loud! The design is great, meant to look like an old rock and roll record sleeve.

Punk Farm is a spirited retelling of the “while the farmer is away, the animals will play” idea. The bold colors and rough edges of the cartoony illustrations bring the motion and energy of rock music to a stereotypical farmyard. By using “Old MacDonald” as the song the band performs,

children can easily participate and jam out while singing a rocking and rolling version of the familiar song. It’s simple enough that it can be used with young children to not just your basic farm animals but also some rock instruments and the sounds with which they are associated. Overall, there isn't much depth, but it is still a fun alternative story for young punks or musically inclined families.

Farmer Joe's animals perform a punk rock cover of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm." ("Thank you, Wisconsin!")
