This book offers a very good introduction to the life many Jewish families lived in Europe during World War II. Anne Frank’s story is told in a way that younger readers can understand. Mr. Parks

and practices of Adolf Hilter and the Nazi army. The text discusses and examines Anne’s life before she was hidden away in a secret annex, what life was like in hiding, her family’s fears and struggles, her hopes and dreams for the future and the legacy of her diary. Black-and-white illustrations including maps and diagrams provide historical and visual references that make the material easier to understand and comprehend for children.

Personal Reaction:
I have always been personally interested in the history and events of the Holocaust, this book simplifies a complicated subject in a way that children can digest, process, and learn from. I think this is a great example of a children’s biography that is simple, easy to understand, and beneficial to young readers, listeners, and learners.

Classroom Extensions:
1. Have students create a timeline of events leading up to Anne Frank’s family going into hiding, their time hidden away in secret, and after they are caught.
2. Ask students to write or journal about what things they would miss about everyday life if they were in Anne’s situation, hiding to save their lives.

Anyone who is familiar with the Who Was Series would sincerely appreciate this text. This series provides biographies on dozens of famous people, but it is written for children ages 9-12. The pages include a short amount of text and usually a sketch to accompany it. This is a quick read and

provides accurate information; however, it is appropriate for the age group. The author definitely took into account the maturity level of the reader, which is appreciated. The character of Anne Frank is written so that the reader feels as though they would know her and can easily relate to some of her life's struggles. I am anxious for the next addition to this phenomenal series. A must for any classroom teacher!

Creative Expression:
We can have the kids write in their own Journal. They can draw pictures of their families. We can also make a tent and pretend they are in hiding.
