A good beginning to a 4 book series. A story set in England about a young lady named "Minty" Cardale. As a very little girl Minty was placed in the care of her Uncle and Aunt, who treated her harshly without any love. Minty's mother died while being falsely accused of running away with another man.

Minty has now been summoned back to Eden Hall to see her dying father and comes face to face with people who don't want her there, namely her stepmother and her son. Minty will find herself being rejected all over again, but she is made of sturdy stock and will find help and acceptance by some in the village right outside Eden Hall. As the book says, this is kind of like a modern day Cinderella story, although her "prince" might leave you a little frustrated at times.

This story could stand all by itself, but there are enough loose ends that it made me want to see what happens next; and the next book, "The Lady of Eden Hall", picks up right where this book ends. It is an easy read, and full of characters; some you will love and others you will despise and still others you will be annoyed at. I enjoyed my time at Eden Hall and in the surrounding village. Hope you will too.
