Another great read, I picked this one up over a year ago and just got around to reading it, sorry I waited so long. Kit Shannon wants to be a lawyer, but in the early 1900’s that’s near impossible. Leaving New York, she is going to live with her aunt in Los Angeles California which is still

more cowboy than high society; just don’t ask her aunt about that because she is determined to make Kit the Belle of Los Angeles; all she needs to do is talk her out of this embarrassing idea of practicing law. Kit is determined to find away, and puts herself into some scary situations in her pursuit. There are a lot of twists and turns, well written, and historically accurate with a peppering of real persons. I’m giving 5 stars for book one of the Trials of Kit Shannon.

In the early 1900s Kit Shannon come out from the East to stay in Los Angeles with her Aunt Freddie. Aunt Freddie's world is the one of high society and wealth. Kit has another objective: having been brought up in a Catholic orphanage under harsh discipline, Kit has studied hard and earned her

certificate in Law and plans to become a full fledged lawyer. This is something unheard of at this time.

Kit finds that it is a man's world and the world is run by graft and corruption under one man's control. She also is befriended by Earl Rogers, a prominent and successful lawyer, who takes her on to work in his law office.

They take on the defense of Ted Fox, a fellow she met in her Aunt's social circle, who is accused of murder. While he refuses to talk Kit and Earl struggle to find out the true story of what really happened. In doing this they also discover how deep the corruption runs in the city and just who is pulling the strings.

There is also a faith-based thread that runs through the story line, as Kit's father was a preacher who was killed by a drunkard while preaching in a saloon. This left Kit and her mother alone in the world and devastated Kit's mother. When Kit's mother died a few years later, the courts assigned her to the orphanage. Drawing on her father's belief and teachings, Kit gets strength to see her way to solving the mystery.

I enjoyed the setting, most of the characters and the plot line.

This book is about a female lawyer in 1903. Many of the courtroom laws and behavior that we take for granted today either did not exist or were in their infancy in 1903. The Earl Rogers character is based on a real California attorney from that time. It was interesting to see how courtrooms were

conducted then, but also a bit confusing given what we know today from various TV dramas etc.

Women lawyers were also in their infancy at this time. The main character, Kit, did have law education from New York, but chose to go to California--partly because her aunt offered to house her there and partly because she hoped the west would offer more opportunities for a woman to practice law. Kit finds she has to stand up to many (both men and women) who want to take things away from her--a lesson she learned long ago when sent to St. Catherine's. (Standing up for what is right.) She does a good job of holding to what she knows is right and what she thinks is God's will even when many others are opposing her.

In contrast, Heath Sloate learned to use cunning to stand up to his bullies. He would use his smarts to outwit those who opposed him, and he would do it in such a way that he wasn't caught or implicated. He finds dirt on others and uses it to blackmail them or plants evidence to get the result he wants.

As the front cover says so well: "The courtrooms of 1903 Los Angeles are a man's world - until Kit Shannon arrives . . . " Kit has felt a special calling to practice law. She arrives in Los Angeles to be under the care of her aunt. But Kit will soon discover that almost everyone is against her

desire to become a lawyer, even her Aunt. She will finally be taken seriously by a well known criminal trial lawyer, Earl Rogers. When he takes on a "high profile case", Kit will begin to learn much. But can she still maintain her desire for truth along with justice and her utmost desire to follow after her deceased father's love of God's word.

This was a well told story and took me into the courtroom, where I got to see the mind of a lawyer and the work involved in pursuing an outcome for your case. I was totally in to this story and enjoyed it thoroughly. I also enjoyed the commitment of Kit to put her standard of justice true to what God's word says. It was not an easy life she will lead, but she stood up for what she believed and I was giving her a "high-five" in my mind as I was reading. A well told courtroom story and I look forward to book two next, "Angels Flight".
