Description

The Tiny Duchy of Grand Fenwick undertakes to rehabilitate its national economy by declaring war on the U.S., since that nation takes tender care of its defeated enemies. Read it as slap-stick humour. Read it as political satire. Read it as a commentary on post-WWII ethical philosophy. But read it!

I was first introduced to this as a theatrical production at my school in the sixties. I still love to reread it, now with the personal history of having a husband who

worked at the International Atomic Energy Agency - supporting those who inspect nuclear facilities worldwide. The issues haven't gone away.

The novel that became the hilarious Peter Sellers movie. A classic satire on war, politics and human nature. The tiny and eccentric country, the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, declares war on the United States - and wins by mistake!
A must-read for teens and adults.

This one was not as good as I remembered - I think I'm out of the mood for humor. Still good, not uproarious. Read it again sometime.

A tiny little nation decides that its best chance for survival is to take on the worlds most powerful country and then lose. Here is a hilarious satire of post WWII politics that is more lighthearted than finger wagging. Hilarious images, mostly having to do with the contrast between a society that
Show More
hasn't advanced far past the medieval era and the US of the early 50s, are scattered throughout the book. Short and sweet, this is a great book to pick up when you're looking for a good, distracting chuckle.

Still classic story of the small Grand Duchy of Fenwick invading the United States in order to quickly lose the war and gain a lot of financial aid. Things don't go quite as planned.... This was made into an excellent film with Peter Sellers, in which he plays multiple parts, including the Grand

Duchess (but not as a beautiful young girl as in the book; even Sellers couldn't pull that one off.)

Highly highly recommended. A true must read.

The movie starring Peter Sellers is also a fun romp if you like zany, improbable stories...When a tiny country attacks the USA hoping to fail (so they can clean up on the aid dollars provided to losers), the fun starts...

This humorous novel is set in the tiny fictional Grand Duchy of Fenwick, an Alpine state which declares war against the United States after a Californian company produces a knock off version of the wine which is the tiny state's sole source of revenue. The war has an unexpected conclusion that
Show More
gives the Duchy a unique opportunity to make an impact on the world stage and influence the nuclear arms race of the great powers (the book was written and set in the 1950s). While very funny and almost absurd in its plotting, the book has through satire some serious points to make about the mutually assured destruction doctrine of the Cold War and of the relations between big states and small states. It was made into a film starring Peter Sellers playing the three leading roles in the book (two male and one female). There are three sequels and one prequel, which I will probably also read.
