Description

Fantasy. Juvenile Fiction. Juvenile Literature. Mythology. HTML: Who cut off Medusa??s head? Who was raised by a she-bear? Who tamed Pegasus? And whatever happened to that Golden Fleece? It takes a demigod to know the answers, and Percy Jackson can fill you in on all the daring deeds of Perseus, Atalanta, Bellerophon, and the rest of the major Greek heroes. Told in the funny, irreverent style listeners have come to expect from Percy (I??ve had some bad experiences in my time, but the heroes I??m going to tell you about were the original old-school hard-luck cases. They boldly screwed up where no one had screwed up before. . . .), this story collection will become the new must-have classic for Rick Riordan??s legions of devoted fans??and for anyone who nee… (more)

Leave it to Rick Riordan to even manage to inject the trademark Percy Jackson humor into a guidebook about the Greek heroes. The major figures are pretty much all here, though you have almost certainly never heard their stories told in quite this way. A very fun read.

A good selection of famous and more obscure heroes. I thoroughly enjoyed this, but didn't care for the narrator of the audiobook all that much.

This is one of the best history books that ever existed and no one can change my mind.

No one ever can tell a story like Percy Jackson does, he can make the lamest events out there seem fun and interesting with one of his snide remarks.

It was really interesting to read about Greek heroes, especially

those I've never heard of (probably bc no one can pronounce their names). It was fun, light and hilarious.
I laughed out loud on multiple occasions!

In general, this book had a healthy dose of Percy that I much needed!

If you're interested in the story behind famous Greek heroes and you like Percy Jackson's type of narration, you will really like this story. If not, this book will probably be boring to you. I'm interested in the stories, and Percy's brand of humor is cute to me. I really enjoyed it.

This book was on my friend's 11-year-old's summer reading list and she was having a really hard time getting through it, so I offered to read it with her. First of all, I cannot believe this is required reading for that age group! Most of us know that the Greek myths are extremely messed-up with
Show More
tons of rape and gory killing and gods cavorting and hey did I mention RAPE? Yeah, so, Riordan kind of glosses over the rapey parts of the myths and I'm not sure that makes it better. As a narrator, Percy acknowledges how extremely messed-up all of this is, and it must have been quite an effort for Riordan to present this material in a way that even approaches appropriateness, but that's not actually even possible. Once I informed my friend of this, she told her daughter she didn't have to finish the book and I believe she even went to the school about it.

This is the first Percy Jackson book I've read (though I think I heard about other ones from either my nephew or my friend's children). It's an attempt to update the Greek Myths for today's teens by using a narrator (Percy Jackson) who uses phrases that teens use these days.

I'm quite a bit older

than that target audience. I knew most of the stories already (although I hadn't read them in quite some time). I found the updated narration parts a bit distracting. The audiobook narrator does a good job of making it sound like a teen/young adult narrator.

Fun retellings of Greek myths with Percy's classic sass. This book focuses on Greek heroes in particular, and I loved that almost half of the heroes were female. Uncle Rick is always thinking about representation and he's awesome because of it.

I liked this book, but I didn't love it. It's a good book for kids to learn more about Greek mythology. There's loads of pop culture references and things that will make you giggle. Overall a good companion novel.
