Oh my god what on earth was that?

I have to admit, I did not have high expectations when I started this, heck even as I was reading the first 20% or so of it I was quite meeeh.
But then that twist happened! And everything got better from then on.

Yes, not much happened in this volume, but I loved how

Emma, Ray and Norman dealt with their discovery and I absolutely enjoyed their theories and speculations. It really shows that a lot of effort went into the writing of this graphic novel rather than just the illustration.
I'm really liking the characters and how their brains are working so far. I also happen to enjoy how impossible the situation seems and can't wait to see what happens next.

All in all this was such a surprisingly good read, I'm eager to discover more.

Series Info/Source: This is the first volume in the Promised Neverland series. I borrowed this from the library.

Story (4/5): I was a bit tentative about picking this up even though I had heard good things about it. I ended up being pleasantly surprised. The story picks up quickly and I was
Show More
impressed with how quickly we were plunged into this dark and mysterious world.

Characters (4/5): I enjoyed Emma, Norman, and Ray but they came across as a bit over characterized. I hope they gain more depth as the series continues.

Setting (5/5): I loved this alternate world that we just get a glimpse of in this series. While most of the book takes place in the orphanage we do get little peeks into the demon run world beyond Grace Field House.

Writing/Drawing Style (4/5): Both the illustration and drawing were easy to follow and well done. No complaints about either of them.

Summary (4/5): Overall this ended up being a lot better than I expected. The story is darker than I thought it would be and introduces some fascinating mysteries very quickly. The writing style and illustration are both well done and I enjoyed them. I plan on continuing the series.

This is a really interesting premise for a manga. The art is really good and definitely adds to the suspense of the kids' cat and mouse game with their opponents. The cliffhanger isn't amazing, but I'm really curious to see where it goes from here.

I would recommend this for someone who

outside the walls of their “perfect” environment, and now, they’re going to do whatever it takes to keep everyone safe.

I watched the anime and when I looked up to see if there was going to be a season two, I was stoked to find out there was a manga series about it! It was so hard to find the first few volumes in person, but thankfully my library had the first five volumes and I immediately put them all on hold. I’m in the process of ordering the volumes for my own personal collection now. I’ve only read one other, short manga series before this and am excited that this will be my first full series I will read!

That being said, I LOVE this. It takes such a quick, dark turn so fast my mouth still dropped open slightly while reading it, even though I knew what was coming from watching the anime. The anime does seem to follow the anime quite closely, though I know there will be a few changes coming up. I’m hoping to get my hands on as many of the volumes as I can before season two comes out in January.

Emma is my hero and I love her spunk and the devotion she has for her family. Norman is that best friend anyone can ask her. Ray too - even with his bit of “no-nonsense” attitude. He says it like it is and everyone needs that, at least every once in a while. Emma especially seems to need both boys in order to keep herself from running and doing things pretty drastically and unplanned. Those boys help her stay grounded.

The artwork is amazing and though in black and white for most of it, still shows such a beautiful range of emotion and settings. Even when things were super dark, nothing was ever hard to read or see.

Since I loved the anime, I know I’m going to love the written series. I would recommend this to a mature audience, as it does deal with some heavy subject manner.

This was a perfect freaky crazy WTF read. Based on the cover and the words Neverland I went in thinking it would be some type of Peter Pan retelling. And in only the loosest way could it be considered that. Instead it’s about a group of orphans who find out that there’s more to the orphanage

than child care. To say anymore gives away the story and I’m not going to do that. You have to read this and go in as blind as possible because it is amazing. There is an anime that was done based off this book as well that’s available on one of the streaming platforms but read the book 1st.

This isn't necessarily a review, but a disclaimer. This series is set in a world where children are harvested for meat. This world is very brutal and dark. If these types of genres aren't new to you, disregard my disclaimer. This has a lot of emotional weight and heavy themes not suited for anyone

who is squeamish, has low tolerance for violence against children, etc. If you choose to continue please consider giving yourself breaks from the material. I enjoy the unconventional and even i was like
