DePaola’s Mother Goose is similar to almost all Mother Goose. It has the obligatory “Humpty Dumpty” and “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary”. I always like Mother Goose because it employs rhythm and rhyme, two things that are important for children to learn. The book is very comprehensive and

quite long. Honestly, nothing really stands out about this book. It is pretty typical of all Mother Goose books. I am underimpressed by dePaola’s illustrations. Compared with some I have seen, they are rather lackluster. I do not like how everyone has beady eyes, just dots. It is his style, but it does not appeal to me.

Tomie brings his delightful pictures that resemble his own family to the mother goose tales. I like to use this book when students discover the author and illustrator to allow the students to see his own personal twist and try to make a nursery rhyme their own by recreating the lillustrations or

5) Mother Goose is a collection of short nursery rhymes. It contains classics such as Humpty Dumpty and Little Bo Peep. Its a fun book for young children to read.

6) One way a teacher can use this story in a classroom is by having students read one story each to the class.

This is useful for students because it teaches them public speaking skills and creates a sense of community in the classroom.

Tomie dePaola, Mother Goose, (1985), New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons.

Tomie dePaola's illustrations bring life and imagination to Mother Goose's nursery rhymes. The lines and colors he uses are soft, making the drawings fitting for an preschool or kindergarten audience. The text includes full versions

of the rhymes making it an interesting read even for parents, as most people are familiar with shortened versions of the rhymes.

dePaola, T. (Ed. & Ill.). (1985). Tomie dePaola’s Mother Goose. New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons.

This is an illustrated collection of over 200 nursery rhymes, many of them in a longer version than the other Mother Goose book I looked at. Still, many of the rhymes are very short, and they do not
Show More
often make much sense, but I suppose the rhythm is more important than the meaning. Some of them are meant to teach lessons to children, or teach them about life in addition to being entertaining. Illustrations accompany every rhyme, but a few of them did not seem to match the corresponding rhyme.

Being that I was not familiar at all with the Mother Goose rhymes, I was a little bit surprised at the “silliness” of some of the rhymes, and I often had trouble understanding the words. As a consequence, I found myself disappointed by the book, maybe because I am too old to be discovering Mother Goose rhymes now. I imagine that children who grow up hearing them recited or sung cherish them because they do not care about the nonsense of a lot of them. Because of this, I actually liked the other Mother Goose book better because it was shorter, and many of the rhymes themselves were shorter (I know this is not a very good reason to prefer a book!). I think it is a fairly good book, however, as far as the intended audience is concerned.

Ages 6 to 10.

This book is good for pre k to kindergarten ages. There are many nursury rhymes in this book and reading them could lead to a lesson on how you can think of your favorite rhyme or you can try and come up with your own.

Tomie dePaola's Mother Goose anthology is filled with over 200 nursery rhymes and lovely illustrations. dePaola filled this book with well known nursery rhymes such as Yankee Doodle and not so well known ones such as Charlie Warlie had a cow. Children will love dePaola's whimsical illustrations he

created to join the nursery rhymes throughout the book while reading aloud with parents.

Mary Ann Hoberman takes a different approach with Mother Goose in her book, You read to me, I'll read to you: Very short mother goose tales to read together. She chose well known Mother Goose nursery rhymes but arranged the book to read as a read-together, read aloud book. Each verse is arranged so two to three readers can take turns between lines throughout the nursery rhymes. Comical and humorous illustrations are paired with the nursery rhymes and will sure to give a new twist on these Mother Goose tales.

This book contains 200 rhymes, ranging from such familiar Mother Goose rhymes as "Old Mother Hubbard", "Simple Simon," and "Little Miss Muffet" to "Yankee Doodle" and other traditional rhymes. Included is a diverse group of children, adults, and farm animals.

One lesson idea is to include teaching

children what rhyming is and how to use it.

I love Tomie DePaola's art. His use of color, strong lines, and negative space make the illustrations warm and inviting. In this book, the illustrations are comical and show a scene from the rhyme. This can help children identify the rhyme before it's read or allow them to guess what's happening in
Show More
the rhyme if they've never heard it before. DePaola writes a brief giving Mother Goose a background before launching into the traditional rhymes. The intro can help children ease into the melody of the rhymes. The first lines are all indexed in the back for easy searching. This is a great collection of all the classic Mother Goose rhymes to have in all one place.

This is a collection of over 200 Mother Goose nursery rhymes and traditional poetry. What makes it really special is De Paola's illustrations. The pencil and chalk drawings are fun, detailed and in tradition with his usual art work. There is also a handy index of first lines. Booklist gives it a

starred review highlighting his art work as well.
