The second of the original Callahan's Place books contains several good Callahan's stories, several non-Callahan's tales (including the memorable farce "Half an Oaf," and Robinson's paen to Robert A. Heinlein: "Rah! Rah! RAH!". It's perhaps the weakest of the three original collections, but the

Callahan stories are still top-drawer stuff.

Spider Robinson's second collection of stories, with half from Callahan's Saloon. Stories related to Callahan's are 'Fivesight,' 'Dog Day Evening,' 'Have You Heard the One...?,' and 'Mirror/rorriM, off the Wall.' Other stories include 'God Is an Iron' which became part of Spider's novel

'Mindkiller.'

This and "Callahan's Crosstime Saloon" are classics. They're funny, thought provoking and hilarious. And I really wish I could think of something punny to say about them. :-)

Great book! This is the 2nd collection of very original short stories with quirky themes that all happen in Callahan's Saloon - an amazing place where fellow patrons are empathetic, compassionate, and accepting of everyone - including talking dogs and aliens. I liked these stories because most of
Show More
them raised interesting questions and stayed with me long after the book was closed. A quick read that left me pondering random ideas raised by the author and believing in the goodness of people. I would definitely recommend this book!

More fun, in the best saloon in all of time and space.

(Who knew that OMNI would just vanish overnight? They were a home for some of my favorite authors.)

There's a brief afterword by the author for each story (because that's what this one is, mostly, is republished stories). There's a foreword (by

the author). This book isn't all Callahan's (which you knew, if you've read the Foreword, or the book). It's still Spider Robinson, and that's enough. At least it is for me.

While this book does have four Callahan stories, it isn't all Callahan. There's a mix of science fiction, fantasy, and non-fiction essays. I particularly liked the essay on Robert Heinlein. I'm sad the next book isn't on Kindle.

About the language -- before giving the book to a young teen, you may

want to see if you think it is appropriate. I didn't think it was *that* bad and I have a low tolerance for out-of-place, "shock" vulgarity.

More stories from Callahan's Crosstime Saloon and just as good as the originals.
