It is about a man that lives in Ohio and makes saddles, he also is a traveling preacher. He is the father of three daughters and the oldest one is having to raise and take care of the two younger ones as the mother died in childbirth. Ann Miller is the oldest daughter and she is left alone with the little girls a lot when her father goes on his preaching jobs. She had no idea what he did or where he went on these journeys but when he was home he made some of the most beautiful saddles of anyone. He was always getting orders for them. And on one of these trips to make a saddle he carried his three daughters to Pittsburgh and they stayed with the doctor that lived next door to another saddle maker. That is when they found two of the most underfed and tattered young men they had ever seen. These were the saddle maker's apprentice but they were indentured slaves.
This book goes through helping slaved to freedom, the loves of Ann Miller and helping Tom and Will the indentured slaves to get away from their mean owners that beat them. It is so written that I wanted to just get in there with the author and help these people myself. This is my first time reading anything written by Rosslyn Elliott and I hope to get to read the others in this series.
Thanks to BookSneeze for sending me this book free to read and review in my own words and thoughts.
Among the amazing characters of Will and Ann, Ms. Elliot shows us a deeper and truly emotional issue....runaway slaves. I sat here reading about Will seeking a better life away from the abuse and hatred, and Ann who is realizing that God has so much more in store for her, and I truly became a part of this debut novel. I become a bit of Will, I became a bit of Ann, and I even became a bit of Jacob....that cruel and abusive man. It was an amazing trip back into time. As Ann and her family became a part of helping the slaves escape, I felt every emotional thought that Ann dealt with. A truly powerful feeling.
The rich historic detail to the underground railroad and helping slaves to seek freedom, never ceases to amaze me. I can't imagine what those people went through. It is an eye opening experience. Will's determination to seek a better life, and his feelings for Ann, was a wonderful moving piece to the story and I found myself often smiling and cheering Will on throughout the novel.
I highly recommend Ms. Elliot's debut novel with 5 Books and two thumbs up. This is an emotional journey of God's guidance, hope, love and perseverance. Without that hope, without that love of God's grace, life wouldn't be the same. This novel is extremely thought provoking and one that shouldn't be missed by any reader! I can't wait to see what Ms. Elliot has in store for her new fans.
When you are reading this story you don't realize just how much history is actually in it. At the end, Ms. Elliott shows all the facts and it is so interesting how much is fiction and how much is actual truth, even down to the pigs in the story. I am really beginning to enjoy historical romance novels and though this one is a little light on the romance, it is still a truly wonderful story. I look forward to seeing what Ms. Elliott comes out with next!!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a light, historical romance novel.
This book was kindly provided to me by it's wonderful author and LitFuse Book Tours for my honest review.
As I read the cover blurb, I thought I was getting into a romance. This book was much more a historical novel though. The two main stories being told are Ann's and Will's. Ann has had a hard life taking care of her family. Her father often travels to preach to far-off congregations. Ann also had to refuse a potential husband at a very young age and has been sad ever since. Will has lost both parents, and he became an apprentice to someone who makes saddles. He has a vicious master though, and eventually takes matters into his own hands. Ann and Will were both very interesting characters. They both dealt with struggles to the best of their abilities. While Ann is devoted in her faith, you get an opportunity to see Will truly seek and grow in his beliefs.
On top of all that, there is also a story involving two runaway slaves who are desperate for freedom. One thing I found interesting was how the author was able to show very good examples of bad people using Bible versus to support their twisted beliefs. While there are no huge surprises or anything like that, the book is very sweet. If you are looking for romance is may be a little on the lighter end there, but the historical story is absolutely fascinating.

Fairer Than Morning by Rosslyn Elliott is probably in the top ten books I've read this year. The story had my attention from the very beginning. Will Hanby's character transformation from broken apprentice to brave Christian reflected a strong sense of personal healing and growth that added depth to the story. I would have liked to have seen more growth and resolution in Ann's character. If Ann's nightmares had been resolved and an additional scene between Eli and Ann had been added, I think the closure of the story would have been more complete. There is a sequel coming out next year, but it does not appear to focus on Will and Ann. Overall, Fairer Than Morning was a surprisingly enjoyable read that I have no doubt I will eventually read again. I recommend it to fans of Christian romances.
