Description

Bestselling novelist Karen Witemeyer joins award-winning authors Regina Jennings, Amanda Dykes, and Nicole Deese for this Texas-sized romance novella collection. Each of the authors' unique voices is on display in stories where courting couples leave a permanent mark of their love by carving their initials into the same oak's bark. In Regina Jennings' Broken Limbs, Mended Fences, a small-town teacher has her credentials questioned by a traveling salesman. In Karen Witemeyer's Inn for a Surprise, two opinionated collaborators with conflicting visions must turn a doomed business venture into a successful romantic retreat. From Roots to Sky by Amanda Dykes follows a young WWII naval airman who heads to Texas to meet the sister of a lost compatriot. Centered around a great oak tree in Oak Springs, TX, this novella collection celebrates the legacy of love through generations. The Kissing Tree is introduced in 1868, a romantic getaway inn next to The Kissing Tree is built in 1891, a cottage to the property is built in 1945, and the tree itself

becomes prominent again in the last contemporary story.

It's incredible how the authors have written these individual novellas to flow and fit so well together. I really enjoyed seeing cameo appearances of the characters (and their progeny) from story to story and felt like I knew The Kissing Tree as an Oak Springs resident by the end of the book. Each author has a unique writing style that will charm you; you can expect a ride into the history of agriculture, a romcom between two complete opposites, a nostalgic and different look at war and loss, and a heart-wrenching growth from fear and grief into healing and remembrance.

I would love to read more collections by these authors. It's a novella collection not to be missed!

I received a copy of the book from Bethany House Publishers and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

I really enjoyed these four novellas that all revolve around a certain tree in a certain town. Each of the stories take place in different years but they are all connected through the families in this town. I loved the characters in each story. I love the romance and the love that happens in each
Show More
story. The four authors that wrote the stories were all true to what happened in the first story. These stories show how the tree, town and the towns people grow with the years. I did not want to put this book down. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

“Broken Limbs, Mended Hearts” by Regina Jennings
What a delightful novella! I love that this short story allowed the characters to fully develop and grow despite the shorter amount of pages. I enjoyed getting to know Bella and Adam and liked that they had a past first before reconnecting several

years later. There was realistic conflict and unpredictability to the plot that was interesting and kept my attention. I liked the incorporation of the spiritual theme of trusting God to work out the details. I definitely recommend this novella!

“Inn for a Surprise” by Karen Witemeyer
Karen Witemeyer is a gift storyteller, no matter the length of the book! This novella has fun characters that I found myself immediately invested in, there was spunky conflict that strengthened the plot, and, as with all her books, the romance was sizzling yet clean. I greatly enjoyed reading this novella and loved the small connections to the first novella in the series. I liked how Phoebe grows in her faith too as she learns to rely more on God and His plan. I read through this story quickly as it was hard to put down. Another highly recommended novella!

“From Roots to Sky” by Amanda Dykes
Amanda Dykes has a lyrical voice in fiction and reading her stories is always delightful. I love how she is able to craft a deep and moving story in a short novella as well. Her characters in this story are captivating and their relationship and interactions were easy to become invested in throughout the novella. I loved their camaraderie and their romance is believable. The growth of the characters both in their relationship with God and with each other is sweet and touching. I greatly enjoyed this novella and definitely recommend this story!

“Heartwood” by Nicole Deese
I have not had the pleasure of reading anything by Nicole Deese until this novella and her enchanting writing was a delight to read! I found myself engrossed in the story and read through the novella in one sitting. I liked the characters a lot and enjoyed their romance throughout the story. I enjoyed the spiritual theme of connecting God’s nature with the people living in the town and loved reading about Abby’s growth in the novella. I am excited to read more by this author and recommend this novella!

Overall, this collection of novellas was a joy to read. I loved how the stories all connected with The Kissing Tree and truly enjoyed each one of the individual novellas. I highly recommend this collection!
