Description

"When the diplomatic embassy from the United States of Europe was freed from the Tower of London, most of its members returned to the continent. But some remained behind in Britain: Oliver Cromwell, sharpshooter Julie Sims, her Scot husband Alex Mackay, and Cromwell's Irish-American self-appointed watchdog Darryl McCarthy. Soon the hunt is on for the most notorious rebel in English history, with King Charles himself demanding Cromwell's head. To make things more confused, the time Darryl spends fighting alongside Cromwell forces him against his well to admire and respect the man, despite Cromwell's demonic reputation among all self-respecting Irish nationalist families like Darryl's own"--

This one is better than Cardinal Virtues and worse than the original volumes. Essentially what you have is a dungeon crawl designed to get the secondary party to Scotland, have the requisite encounters to keep the British portion of the story going and not trip up the other competing narratives.

The writing suffers from an acute high/low problem as it bounces back and forth between the high level national command sections and the actual two parties navigating the dungeon. Its a fun read but doubt I would read it twice. The encounters work as encounters but do little to broaden or deepen the characters. Beyond strengthening the bond between Cromwell and McCarthy, they don't even seem to add experience points.

Good story slowed by having to slog through the multiple dialects employed to demonstrate eruditious research. Maintaining vertical(timeline) and horizontal(geography) continuity is sufficiently difficult without having to translate from the muckle of dialects strewn about. Cromwell rescues his

children, marries an uptimer and proceeds with an Alternate Reformation.

Enjoyable as always. Need to read up on Cromwell.

Oh boy the American way wins over Cromwell who wins over out Good Old Boy Daryl. Not really unless sharpshooter young women are the American way!
