Description

Fantasy. Fiction. Romance. HTML: My name is Bonita Torres, and eight months ago I was an unemployed college graduate without a plan. Now I'm an investigator with the Private Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigations team of New York. Pretty awesome, right? The Cosa Nostradamus, the magical community, isn't quick to give up its secrets, though. Not even to fellow members. Not even when it's in their best interests. So we've been busting our tails, perfecting our forensic skills, working to gain acceptance. The team's tight... but we have our quirks, too. And our Big Dog, Benjamin Venec...well, he's a special case, all right. But we can't give up. We're needed, especially when a case comes along that threatens to pit human against fatae. But one wrong move could cost us everything we've worked for....… (more)

While I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Hard Magic, this book really took the series to a new level. Book one was a lot of character and world development. This book on the other hand really threw us into the action. The team is put on the job of a new investigation from the
Show More
beginning, and although it seems like a cut and dry case, they soon find out that it's not what the expected, and a lot is on the line.

The main character of this book is a kick-butt, never holding back, smart-mouthed, awesome female. I think Bonnie could quickly become one of my favorite female characters. The side-characters have such strong personalities. They each bring something new to the table and make the story even better.

Overall, this book was a great mystery that has just the right amount of sexual tension and kept me guessing what was going to happen until the very end. The world is really unique, and while it has it's own set of rules and creatures, it doesn't leave you struggling to remember what is what and who is who. I'm definitely looking forward to another exciting adventure with Bonnie and the rest of the PUPIs.

The PUPIs may still be new at this business of magical crime scene investigation, but they're learning fast - unfortunately, their current case is leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Called in to verify the victim's story, what they're uncovering is a web of complicated questions and murky
Show More
motivation. Was it really attempted rape? Or did the victim set up her attackers? The involvement of a revered member of the Fatae isn't making things any easier, and with tensions between the Cosa, Council and the Fatae in the Big Apple mounting, Bonita and the team are stretching to the breaking point to find some answers. As things heat up on the job, sparks between Bonnie and Ben continue to simmer, ratcheting the tension tighter still.

This series seems to be running parallel in time to Retrievers, and the second point of view is really interesting. I can't wait to see what happens next!

I like this series. This is the second book in this series but the third one I have read in the last two days.
PUPI has now been open for 8 months. They are all working well together as a team. Still a lot of people don't want them around afraid of what they might find.

they just recieved. It is new and the first one they actually get to the scene before the evidence gets smudged. Unlucky for Bonnie she is the best of gleaning and remembering everything so she gets to the scene. It was a attempted rape and a murder of the rapest and friend was hurt. The Ki-rin was the girl's companion and he killed and injured the attackers.
Bonnie has a hard time gathering the evidence for once and she keeps looking at males different for awhile.
The case should be a closed one easy but then the wounded said she provoked him. A case of she said/he said.
The Ki-rin is a member of the fae and a rare cousin of the unicorn. He cannot be around someone who is not vigin and just by being attacked loses her companion.
Their is already tension between the fae and the humans talents and the mood is getting worse and worse. They need to find out who is telling the truth and who is lying to them.
Bonnie and one of the Big Dogs Ben Venec are reading each other more. they are comming in with words not just the images the others get. If one of them gets their shields down a little the other is drawn in. Their is a stronger attraction building up that neither wants.
I really like the interaction of all the characters it seems real to me. It is a clean easy read that keeps your attention. I will read more from Laura Anne Gilman

I'm really enjoying this series. This second book had a great main plot, although it's hard to get used to the 'bad guy' not being brought forth and made to face justice. This series is about a team that finds out the facts about what happened during a crime, not about bringing the perpetrators of
Show More
the crime to justice. It doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the story, but it's different. Feels a bit unfinished. I found the secondary plot to be neglected; there was a resolution to it without there being much storyline in front of it: you saw the characters plotting it, and you saw the protagonists ending it, but almost nothing in between. Made that feel very disjointed. I love the main characters, each is interesting, amusing and compelling in their own right. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I'm not usually a fan of police procedurals, but I do enjoy the characters in this series and it keeps me reading.
